I’m afraid I’m just relaying what is being said on a-net this morning, but if that thread is to be believed, then the LBA-LCY route could be going.
Hope this isn’t true.

Yes, that’s the point. As soon as you start the putting the price up flying becomes even more unattractive a proposition, in addition to it being slower, less convenient etc. etc.

‘Im not sure I’d agree with you there, £30 return base fare, if marketed well could work as well as other routes. Perhaps a 733 is a touch too large, but Leeds-London by train is no comparison for Birmingham-London by train, its almost double the length?’
The thing is if you have a £30 return base fare the government takes £10 in tax, the airports take another £10-£15 in charges leaving the airline £5-£10 pounds for a return flight. This is simply not enough.
The bottom line is that the train is the quickest, simplest and most convenient way of getting from Leeds to London, flying is the most fun, and the coach is the cheapest with fares starting a £1 each way! Being the ‘most fun’ is not enough for the majority of travellers!
I think Jet2 are a great airline and look forward to them being around for a long time, so I say again I really hope they never consider a London service.
They key word in there is “base” fare. That is the fare that is advertised, promoted like hell to gain interest, and made available on 3 or 4 seats on every flight. Then the price bands increase is more seats are sold. This is what the majority of airlines do, and I cant think of any UK Domestic service run with competition that would make a profit if sold purely on the base fare.

The eventual number of GNER London – Leeds trains will be 80 a day

The main reason for EMA-LHR and BHX-LHR stopping was NOT due to competition from surface transport. The main reason why these two routes were dropped was slot contraints at LHR – put quite simply, it got to the point where there were no more conveniently timed slots available and the slots that those services used could be used more profitably by higher capacity aircraft operating on other BD routes.
Andy
Correct with respect to BD. I think you’ll find the reason Community Express stopped their BHX-LGW was actually because they went bust though!

Its pretty much the same argument with EMA or BHX to London. Airlines say its too shorter distance, however, the rail network is too greater competition and when you take into account check-in time at airport and increased security (albeit for our own good) its not really as quick.

I would have flown to LCY from LBA a few weeks ago – the ticket price was reasonable, but the additional charges levels at LCY are so high it meant I went by train, which still cost £70. The amount of rail engineering going on means getting cheap rail fares is almost impossible as GNER can’t say which services will be running from one week to the next.

“PLEASE Jet2, start an LBA-LGW service!!!”
If you want Jet2 to survive in the future you need to avoid wishing for this route. Leeds is too well served by rail for flights to London. I know BD do well with LHR but this is because of people flying to LHR, not London.
There is no way Jet2 or anyone else can compete with the train to London.
Have to agree with you there totally.

Having worked for BD for years, I know what Vince is saying about people on the LBA going to LHR not London. There were many people on those services connecting onto other flights, however there were a lot of business travellers too but I don’t know where they go when they get off the flight!
Its a damn shame to see the LCY service go though.

Just to put this statement into context:
There are currently 33 direct trains a day, each way, between Leeds and London.
Over the next five years this will rise to over 40.
The current average journey time is 2 hours 22 minutes, falling to 2 hours 6 minutes over the next five years.
The cheapest flexible ‘walk up’ fare is about £65 return.
The cheapest restricted ‘book ahead’ fare is £19 return.
Some trains currently have wi-fi internet access, all trains to have it by 2007.
Many trains have a restaurant service, all trains have a buffet service.
All trains have a smoking section (if that’s your thing).
Trains run city centre to city centre.
I know this means very little to aviation enthusiasts but the ordinary traveler will pick the train over the plane any day. If jet2 start LGW service it will not last lone.

I hope the cabin crew and flight deck on the ATR aren’t going to be layed off because of this
Can’t speak for the CC as they are bmi, but we already have work lined up for the ATR, so it won’t effect AAT staff at all.

Can’t believe bmi have done it again. 🙁
bmi will be getting a poor reputation for messing about with routes and dropping them if they’re not careful.
Future tense? Speak to many people today and they will tell you that its happening now. Just wait until they screw IAD up in a few weeks, customer satisfaction will nosedive again.
PLEASE Jet2, start an LBA-LGW service!!!
