RE: Leaving
OK, I’ve not visited much over the last few days and haven’t had a chance to try the new forum mayself but, may I suggest the reason a lot of you dislike it is because its “different”. After a year or so looking at this one its understandable that a big and sudden change may not be liked at first. I’ve been to a few forums around the net that have changed and at first you hate it, mainly because your not used to it, but it soon becomes the norm and you get used to it everythings fine.
I think its a good idea changing over gradually and if its good in the long run then it can’t hurt to give it a go.

RE: Leaving
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-09-02 AT 07:50 PM (GMT)]I think setting up two vbulletin forums first is a great idea to ease us into accepting and liking vbulletin. Many of the members (including myself)feel because we had such problems getting on the new forums, that vbulletin is just one large pile of problems, which is probably all wrong.First impressions obviously are going to make a lot of members against the move, however,if we move on slowly then its probably going to be a lot better and easier for us to leave DCforum. In a couple of months we won’t know the difference (if the move goes ahead)By the way I didn’t really like the colour scheme, looked a bit like the old purple forums we had a year ago 😛 Light colours are better like the colours we have now.
Webmaster,I think the way you have handled the situation is excellent, even though you’ve heard so may complaints and been under much stress with the problems with vbulletin, you have kept your cool and been very helpful towards our worries and dislikes.Thanks….
I think maybe we should all show our appreciation towards him, even though you may dislike the new forums,as from an earlier post on GD all our ideas have been taken onbaord, just didn’t go quite according to plan. Also, all this was for our satisfaction!

RE: Leaving
Hi, Webmaster.
Thank you very much for the speedy reply.
“I am considering setting up two forums in the vbulletin software, Today’s Pilot and a flight sim board. This will allow users to use the new software if they want, without loosing anything from this board. I will keep you all informed.”
That sounds like an excellent solution. It would also give the users who prefer DC a chance to get used to the new software. I openly admit that all this talk of servers and interfaces does go over my head but I will say how grateful I am that you have given us a forum back to use whether you change it eventually or not.
Regards,
kev35

RE: Leaving
I shouldn’t really get involved wth discussions, but seeing as though this is a direct question…
User’s opinions will of course be taken into account, and it does seem that the consensus is to stick with dcforum.
However… There is a speed issue and some users have complained and commented that the dcforum version is too slow. I myself have tested the difference between vbulletin and dcforum on a 56k connection as well as ADSL. vbulletin is faster, due to the fact it is based on a relational database rather than a flat file.
Some people have commentated on vbulletin being complicated, it offers more features than dcforum, such as a calender etc. The features that dcforum has would have all been imcorporated into vbulletin, including user votes and post counts.
Also we will be moving servers soon, going from unix to windows, beacuse of this all passwords would have to be reset, another reason for moving to vbulletin at this point.
I am considering setting up two forums in the vbulletin software, Today’s Pilot and a flight sim board. This will allow users to use the new software if they want, without loosing anything from this board. I will keep you all informed.
If anyone has any comments then feel free to put them forward.
Regards,
WebMaster

RE: Leaving
Hi, Webmaster.
“NO I wont delete the thread as its useful to gague people’s opinion on the subject.”
“It is not possible to run the two versions of the forums, but I may consider a test version, I will keep you posted.”
From the first part of your post can we surmise that you will actively take into consideration people’s opinions on the matter? And if you do, how are you interpreting the opinions of forum members at the moment?
I ask this because the second part of your post seems to indicate that at the moment you are carrying on with the new forum, even if it is as a test version first.

RE: Leaving
Sorry webmaster didnt mean to be nasty in my post jsut then. I didnt think about putting it in GD at the time cos i started off just asking the AW people (well i meant to)
I have no speed problems proabably because i had ADSL and I am a webmaster myself so I know how it can be with having to transfer data over which is made even more difficult as once i had to convert the formnat as well which made it about 10 times longer to complete an upgrade program!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-09-02 AT 09:30 AM (GMT)]NO I wont delete the thread as its useful to gague people’s opinion on the subject. Your post was deleted because I thought it was more suited to the GD forum.
The two emails occurred due to an import error, some users could use the first password and others the second.
Some users may have experienced speed issues with vbulletin because we were working on the data. The import included over 2,000 users and 80,000 posts. Thats a lot of information which put a large load on the server.
It is not possible to run the two versions of the forums, but I may consider a test version, I will keep you posted.
Again appologies for any inconviences.
Regards,
WebMaster

I’ll bring the Scotch. I’ll have to fly over to the U.K., of course. Maybe catch a football match while I’m at it.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-09-02 AT 09:16 PM (GMT)]This forum seems much much better! I am not sure of the possiblity of things like Messaging others users with such easy.
Did anyone else get this problem:
Webmaster sent out new emails to me for each of my accounts. I got an email then a second saying ignore the first email with new password. Well it turns out the second password saying ignore the first was wrong and it was the first that was correct!
I persoanlly think it was rude of webmaster to DELETE my poll about the old and new forums. I guarantee he will delete the one in GD as soon as his shift starts in the morning!

RE: Leaving
I found that it was rejecting my password too although it said “T5” was a member! Eventually I discovered that I had to have my password reset and sent to me by email. I requested the password about 6 times and it just wasn’t coming through, even when given about an hour or so to do so. Having left it a little longer, I checked my email for about the twentieth time last nighte and the 6 emails containing passwords were there! :O

RE: Leaving
Although I wasn’t on the “old forum” very long I did prefer it. Couldn’t access the forum all day yesterday as my password wasn’t being accepted. I thought perhaps it was closed down early for 9/11.
Hope to chat with you again soon andrewm.

RE: Leaving
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-09-02 AT 05:29 PM (GMT)]One last post, as I gotta spend tonight moving:
Cargo and express parcels carrier Emerald Airways is considering favourably, the distant prospect of resuming passenger flights to IOM. They used to operate the IOM-LPL shuttle flights from 1996-1999 and I was lucky enough to use them a few times.
They used HS-748’s (Who else uses these for passenger work?!). Apparently, they would still use 748’s for passenger work. They were looking at a mix of ATR-42 and ATR-72, but they spent the money buying a rival instead. So it’s still the old HS-748’s with the ridiculous 40″-ish seat pitch! Despite dusty old seats, the leg room made them very comfy flights.
The full version of events is available by clicking:
http://www.iomonline.co.im/Businessfullstory.asp?storyid=14
Also, passenger numbers have slightly increased at IOM over this time last year. BA have suffered, but Flybe have had stonking growth. They often use BAe. 146-300’s to LCY whereas a year ago it was only a Dash 8-200. The spare -200 now operates to Newcastle every few days.
