Lee on Solent Fly-in

OK chaps,

There is a good chance there will be a fly-in at Lee on Solent as part of the Hovercraft Museum open days on Monday May 30th.

Since this is an MOD airfield, any potential visitors must have the MOD Third-party insurance but, with reference to interesting and vintage aeroplanes as a priority, please register your interest at;

Look forward to seeing you there.

Lee on Solent fly-in – the facts

Watcha – Mr Crutch himself here (and no, it’s not a tax-dodge name)

Access to the hangars will NOT be permitted, nor will pedestrian/vehicle access. I’ve had weeks of negotiation on getting this approved by the various parties. Hants Police (who currently operate the airfield) have to keep their prime job of running an Air Support Unit and not an airfield, hence why Lee is reasonably restrictive anyway. The agreement we have is that it’s combined with the Hovercraft Museum event so that folk turning up actually have something to look at (our parking area at the southern end if disued 17/35 is right next to the access gate, and we’ll run a crew shuttle back and forth). The organisers of that have granted free access for pilots and all occupants as the ‘landing fee’ (= charitable donation) can all go straight to charity; no one of the organising or the ops team on the day is getting anything for this.

Please continue to spread the word, and to re-iterate hoverfly2005@navigatair.com is the e-mail for those who want to come. If it all goes well, hopefully we can do another event in the future, and with less restrictions.

Thanks folk

Mike

Hint from experience: You many not need to pay any extra for this. Just ring up your current insurer and ask for Crown Indemity and they may just include it in the current premium.

I got a reply to my e-mail, from Mike Crutch (yes, really…..), the crux of which is that your the landing fee takes the form of a £30 charity donation. It also includes admission to the hovercraft museum.

Any idea on weather this will enable those of us arriving by road to have a nose round the air side? I know all the hangars are very spread out and not very acessable. But there are a lot of aircraft there I would love to see close up.
good pub over the road is the Swordfish. Is very popular on sunny weekends, worth getting there early. Of course there is also a beach across the road too.

Yeah, I forgot the link because my brain is full.

The Swordfish is no more. It burned down. The place was empty and is now being redeveloped.

The nearest Bun Penny or Wyvern, both towards the back of the airfield.

As for inspection of hangers, I very much doubt it. There will not be the coverage to keep an eye on everyone and it is still, strictly, MOD.
