This howler was drawn to my attention by a pal earlier today:

And that is what the internet was designed for – didn’t you get the memo?. :diablo:
Sorry but I missed the memo because some bloke in the pub should have told me but everyone stays at home now on the internet and all the pubs have closed down as well.

You do realise someone will read your post J and take it at face value in a couple of years so we can all read about the top secret silver Spit in the daily mail!

Okay, I figured it out….
The Silver Spitfire escorted the Dambusters…it was there to reflect the enemy searchlights, thus blinding the Germans.
Thought up by Barnes Wallis, no doubt.
It was last seen when Amy Johnson departed for the Isle of Wight. I’ll ask TIGHAR to start a search ASAP.

The cover that Amazon displays is not always the final cover, due to production timings. So it is quite possible a cover was designed by the publisher, info sent to Amazon etc so they can start getting pre-orders/reviews etc, then a corrected cover designed and (imperfectly) distributed thru the distribution channels.
Or it could be a complete balls-up!

Was just talking about this with a friend who asked about The Silver Spitfire on my Facebook book review page. She had found the same cover but with no Dam Buster reference. I went to Amazon while looking for more detail on the book and choked on my coffee. Mind you, Kristen also mentioned both the publisher and Book Depository had spelt his surname as Neill in various places.
Have to admit I hadn’t heard of anything the book mentions (and wasn’t 100% sure about it given the stuff-up on the cover) so it’ll be interesting to find out more. Reminded me I don’t have any Neil books so… 😉

I’d be surprised if he doesn’t know. After all, its his book!
Good point! When I read the blurb for the book I thought maybe the whole thing was someone’s fantasy. Clearly put off by the mistake on the cover.

Tom Neil is still very much with us. Can’t be that difficult to ask him what the hell this is about.

Erasing any evidence of its provenance and Faced with too many questions about the mysterious rogue fighter, he contemplated increasingly desperate measures to offload it
It may just be me but, the phrases “evidence of it’s provenance” and “faced with too many questions” seem awfully familiar.

Someone tell Tom about the cover if you see him at Legends!
Had the pleasure of meeting Tom Neil back in 2010.
Always hoped he would write about his experiences with the 9th AF.

Looks suspiciously like the work of a certain artist, who I believe has had his own provenance called into question several times!
