The praise :
1. arrival and parking were no problem for me i arrived a bit earlier than i would normally being concerned after the previous fiasco.
2.As usual an amazing line up of participants,Mr Grey and his team at TFC are to be wholeheartedly applauded. The Constellation was magnificent,P-39 an unbelievable achievement(even if Hintons taxiing speed was very fast!) ,and the Polikarpov was unusual but very much appreciated amongst the spectacular line up.
3. A good display, although maybe not as fluid as past shows,- but hey ,it’s not really a problem to me i can wait!!
4.I wouldn’t want to single out any one pilot – they are all outstanding but i thought the Guv’nor flew “he’s ” joker routine like it was going to be the last time ,fantastic really giving the Bearcat a good workout.
5. departure ,i wanted to get away earlier than i would normally and had no real problems – maybe ten minutes or so from parked to the M11 roundabout.
The criticism :
1.As already commented on in other threads all those people who blag their way out to the flightline, the drama queens in period clothes, jobsworth marshall’s who refuse to move for punters to take their pics, and of course all the unknown press photographers, while i was doing the flightline there was some pretty nasty abuse being hurled ,and it was the same last year.
2. The dreadful commentator(the english one) ,also mentioned elsewhere,it was bad enough suffering him on the legends video’s,but now we have him all day,get shot of him before next year.Jerry Mead and other previous commentators must be appalled.
3.This nasty new idea that we put up a grandstand ,fence off even more of the free taxiway viewing area and charge, another 15 quid for the priviledge,in the hope of clawing a bit more cash out of the punters, and then stick a food van just in front of the bank by the land warfare museum thereby obscuring more viewing area.I don’t have a problem with the admission fee, programme flightline charges, but if they carry on like this it will very soon be difficult to get at the crowd line with out another bung.
Your thoughts please
Steve

And I always found the best cure for any rude photographer ‘press’ or otherwise was a stout ‘Why don’t you naff off’, then have them removed by security from the flightline for disturbing the pilots concentration… :p
Why cant you spotters & photographers just chill out and accept what you get.. If you don’t like it, vote with your feet & don’t bother turning up next year! 😡 .
I think that if you invite people to vote with their feet you may be on dodgy ground,it is a give and take situation and a bit of common sense and reasoning is a better way forward.
Airdisplays “need” the spectators,”need “the planes “need” the pilots/groundcrew and all the other hardworking personel. It does’nt work if you remove any of the cogs.
Legends is “safe” for the moment, there is no competition, but i used to think the same for “the much missed fighter meet” displays at North Weald. 🙂

Why cant you spotters & photographers just chill out and accept what you get.. If you don’t like it, vote with your feet & don’t bother turning up next year! 😡 As somebody has already said, probably 90% of people (Your average man-in-the-street and his kids) went home totally satisfied after seeing some nice hardware flying.
I am a spotter AND a photographer (and very serious about both) and I went
home very happy after Saturdays display. I had a fantastic day, got some great photos (including some period shots including Actors in period dress) and enjoyed some of the best historic flying in the world. 🙂 🙂
HOWEVER…..
I am now outraged 😡 at your appalling attitude to the public who pay to go in to see you and your aeroplane(s). Yes, I know you need to do pre-flight and other checks. Yes, they should not be rushed. I am patient and can wait for my photos. I realise that other people can be impatient (why not just just ignore them) but remember that enthusiasts, including photographers and spotters, are the people that CARE that the raritys were there. Your 90% probably would have had just as good a day without the Polikarpov or P39.
If you have that much of a problem with enthusiasts then maybe YOU should not bother turning up next year!! Unless you’re ‘Sir’ Grey (which I doubt as he clearly organises the show to bring enthusiasts in) then there’s plenty of other aeroplanes to go around owned/operated by people appreciate their audience!!

Mr Tweed/JDK or whatever your name is, I take it you forgot who you were pontificating at….
At no time did I say “”It’s unforgiveable, I lost my temper”, That’ll be Skypilot62/mad manx who uttered the words….
Everything I said in my post stands 😀
JDK, Ewan is almost right. I did use the words in my post but in parentheses which indicates it was a quote. Check the pre title sequence from a well known war film with lots of Buchon 109’s and Spitfires & Hurricanes set in the summer of 1940 and you’ll know where I pinched it from. Apologies to Ewan for any inadvertent flak.
JDK, perhaps a little calm and rereading yourself? I was not deliberately being offensive, hence the liberal use of the cheesy icons 😎 :p 😉 😀 😮 😡 😮 🙂 , perhaps it is my slightly warped humour which does not transcend so well via a keyboard that’s the problem. In my own little way I was trying to highlight the very pettiness you’ve pointed out (more eloquently than I did), but in a light hearted way (hence the childish mannerisms!). No offence intended, and I apologise to one and all if anyone mistook my writings seriously!
The only serious point was about approaching people politely for pictures and my gratitude to those who helped me a few weeks ago. I shall measure my words more carefully before tipeing on a kaybored. 😀 (English humour!)
I shall now go to bed having been suitably chastened. I am obviously spending a little too much time in a rarefied atmosphere! 😀

Sorry I didn’t make the Vulcan on Sunday, also. I was around – Robbo & Kev found me later – but I was quite tired after a long drive from Plymouth.
That goes for the pub before & after too.
By: st170dw - 13th July 2004 at 23:31
This sounds familiar…
Anna (Mark9) and I were also at the Vulcan at 11:00 on Sunday, joined not long after by Ashley (hello again, Becka!), with her Spitfire jewellery and Elvis bag, and eventually (after prompting by phone… ) by Robbo, Kev35, and MikeJ.
You couldn’t have failed to miss us – together we made a weird-looking group! For example Kev (in his wheelchair) did not look comfortable acting as Robbos go-kart/camera bag-holder!!! Or how about when some of the guys lunched on beer with cod and chips covered in some sort of green gunk?
Anyway, Anna enjoyed her ride on the rocket shaped Harrier simulator, so all is right with the world…

Sorry I was not meaning to appear to criticise people for an apparent no show. I had not met anyone from the forum at that time and I was led to believe by someone who has that we were the only ones around.
I suspect that weirdness is all comparative and there were some odd people around. You probably aren’t as weird as you think!
I am sorry I missed you all and hope I can meet you in the future.

JDK,
We are all entitled to our opinions, and my post was in response to the constant whingeing that seems to pervade this forum, especially about FL2004. I’m sorry that you choose to disagree with my opinions, but thats your choice and its a free country matey.
And the reason this is an anonymous forum is that I can be just that…
Well said after a certain PM I no had better not, anyway I couldn’t have put it better myself 😀 😀

There were only two other people from the forum at the Vulcan at 11.00 on the Sunday but since I overslept because of a late night/early morning and the presentation was in a pub I wasn’t surprised!

Hi Ewan,
My name is James Kightly. Happy to let you have my e-mail by PM. I was responding to your post, and Skypilots, as they were both in my opinion, less than considered. Sorry you wish to stand by your remarks, as they don’t match your usually sensible posts.
Perhaps you’d like to elabourate on your role, and come from behind the alias?
Yours, in aviation – James

You are alowed to think Steve, and have an opinion. Sadly a lot of people then go on to hurl abuse or make remarks at others expense. It’s easy, and (slightly) fun. It’s also a poor show.
I appreciate your thoughts, and those that have been expressed articulately; but some people, who I know, make cheap remarks, which belittle them and the recipient. It’s not big, it’s not clever.
Who owns the IWM? No-one – it’s a national treasure. You and I can provide feedback to the museum if we wish.
Moving on.

What is going on?
I feel like there’s been a reversion to childhood for some people who not only ought to know better but I know DO know better!
There is a big difference between abuse and discussion.
For those of you that don’t understand or just want an argument –
I had a good day out at Legends on saturday, enjoyed every aspect of my day out and regretted not managing my time better so i could go back on sunday .I aired my thoughts to see what people on here thought but sadly it has proved to me that you are not allowed to think ,have an opinion or say anything that doesn’t suit on this forum.
For those of you hard done by volunteers who howled and hurled abuse you might like to know that i did the volunteer at airshows bit thirty years ago when a visit from the BBMF was a major event, and yes i’ve assembled crowd barriers and cleared up rubbish in the rain when everyone had gone home ,and i’ve seen people worrying about the ‘takings’ when the weather was crap so don’t say to me that this is non profit making, it had to be then and it still does to continue.

Unconstructive complaints are not welcome.
Suggestions can be looked at, and responded to; there’s no need to rant.
Ewan. I hope that was tongue in cheek? If not, it would be great that the rest of us have to put up with your bad temper because someone has put your nose out of joint. I presume you have a role on the flightline. I’ve troubled to asnswer and explain, not rant and roar here. Sorry if your cross. You might like to consider how you appear in your post.
“It’s unforgiveable, I lost my temper”
Absolutely childish. I like this forum; for the sharing of info and discussion. A bit of banter and backchat is great. This impresses no-one.

Maybe I’m being a bit padantic here, but what was the point in going – to get some good pictures or to appreciate the aircraft, a superb flying display and all that they entail???
Want some good pictures? Ask TFC/OFMC/IWM et al nicely in advance (as my father and I did), you’ll be met at the Guardroom, given a free pass, a stepladder ( 😡 😉 ) and free reign to cross the hanger barriers and to snap away till your little heart’s content. No annoying “Drama Queens”, visitors or other humans to interact with and spoil your glorious photo moment. We were even lent a ruler for scale, having forgotten our own! This I did several months ago and was treated with the utmost cooperation and generosity – a polite question and civillity will go a long way. To those in the know, many thanks for the help.
To the gits with the ladders, etc. at airshows and the whingy attititude – BOG OFF! 😡 Meanwhile, back on planet earth the rest of the human race will be perfectly tolerant and accepting of one other’s foilbles (not a nasty skin condition!) exude great patience and forebearance with one another and solve the world peace issue (well, we can dream!)
“It’s unforgiveable, I lost my temper” 😎

Reading all the garbage (especially from a certain Mr Albert Ross!) thats being written on here about who stands next to their aeroplane, or pilots taking too long to do a pre-flight etc has made me vow to take as much time as possible doing my walkround, pre-flight/after flight checks…also wearing the loudest, most historically inaccurate flying clothing possible. I can’t believe people take the time to write this kind of rubbish!
And I always found the best cure for any rude photographer ‘press’ or otherwise was a stout ‘Why don’t you naff off’, then have them removed by security from the flightline for disturbing the pilots concentration… :p

The very least they could do would be to park them at a 45 degree
This idea was put forward a few years back at Duxford.
The idea lasted about as long as the guy who came up with it.
Have you any idea how difficult it is to place 30 or 40 aircraft on the line in different slots leaving gaps for visiting display aircraft?
Add to this an aircraft arriving early, movements to and from the hangers
with aircraft that have gone Tech,Aircraft taxing past the marsheller and doing there own thing etc etc
I could go on,taking the time to get them all at 45 degrees is not only inpractical but a total nightmare for the guys moving the aircraft onto the flight line
I totally agree that the aircraft would be positioned better to photograph placed like this but i can assure you this is not something that is going to happen

Well I had a good friend who came from Buenos Aires, Argentina JUST for the show. Arrived 6am on Sat and left 3pm yesterday. That’s a 14,000 mile, 36 hour (with knees up nose), £1,100 round trip.
He thought it was well worth it.
Before FL he’d seen Stearmans and one T6 fly so the sight of 10 Spits all at once was beyond belief. He didn’t mention the “drama queens”, and he didn’t mention the engineers hanging around (I did tell him before he left that the UK summer was perfect, but it was just that the 362 days either side of the summer could be cold and wet).
I think we should consider ourselves very lucky for what we have on our doorstep without getting so tied up with the subtle details of how it might be presented..

By: Yak 11 Fan - 13th July 2004 at 14:03
To be fair when I crewed at Legends mobile phones were not that popular, infact most of them were in use as chocks.
