Legends Advice Please !

Planning my first every visit to Legends on the Saturday.

Anybody have any tips ?

Not bothered about photography, just want to see the flying. Amongst other things, we where do you end up being parked and can you watch the flying from your car.

Thanks all

I timed the flights one year – about 15 mins from take off to landing. Not sure if they have increased the time aloft since then.

The video should be available from Plane TV IIRC – sconnor is the one to answer this…

Thanks for quick replies

Thanks to you both for coming back so quickly, £99 doesn’t sound too steep, but as you say, it depends how long you are aloft, it would have been nice to have had an open cockpit view of the proceedings below.

Any info on a DVD release date would be most appreciated.

Out of interest for the future, what was the cost of a flight in the DH TigerMoths?

I heard £99 quoted but not sure how long you got for that.

From what I managed to make out from Bernard (Endless) Chabbert the people responsible for the engineering are too old to continue.

She will be ‘retired’ from flying but maintained for ground running. It seems to be a real shame that the knowledge to keep this aircraft airworthy is not being handed down…

Flying Legends ’08 video release

A wonderful day out yesterday at my first flying legends. It was great seeing so many different marks of Spitfire in the air together. I was particularly impressed by the power diving and immelmann turning P51’s. What a shame Sally B didn’t fly to make up the B-17 trio due to it’s US engine.
Question: As my own efforts were so poor, does anyone know when the annual Flying Legends DVD is released? I assume it will later on this year, but when?

Also, I didn’t quiet understand why Pink Lady is being retired, surely (as long as she’s airworthy) someone can be found to continue operating her?

Out of interest for the future, what was the cost of a flight in the DH TigerMoths? I saw a tariff board for the Rapide but not for the Moth (I was skint and didn’t want to ask at the desk).

You forgot…

Get there before the gates open, then on entering the airfield, make for the area next to the Tank Bank, taking your time to get everything out of the car and annoying people by getting in the way while doing so.
Make sure that you securely batten down those 3 windbreaks that you bought at Skegness last year. You may not have enough with only 6 folding chairs, you may have to buy some more.
Make sure you take lots of kids, especially babies who will be terrified and scream, or those in betweenies who form a group and p### about with their mobile phones and yap, or the keen young ones who run around in the crowd playing very loudly with the recently bought blow up Red Arrow, and knock into you during that vital camera shot, make sure that you ignore your kids at all times.
Pity it’s not Mildenhall, you could take dogs there that were terrified and howled all the time while their owners ignored them.
You will have to make sure that the stepladder is well chained to the metal fence or some ignorant people may try and remove it.
Leave all your stuff lying about, no-one will knick it, don’t worry, then you can be happy and relaxed for the next few hours while you wander round the airfield.
On returning to your enclave, just before the show starts, make sure that you look with disdain at the poor sods who have had to set up right at the back of the windbreaks and simply have a view of stripey colours.
Make sure at all times that you will stand up and talk very loudly, especially if some one behind is trying to video events.
If anyones complains about you standing on the stepladder, just pretend you are deaf, or better still be aggresive, well, you got there first.
Impart your lack of knowledge at the top of your voice to whoever is standing close by, after all, we all know that the P-51 currently flying is actually a Mk 52 Spitfire, didn’t you know that.
Make sure that all rubbish is thrown on the ground, drink lot’s of beer in order that you have shoulder your way through people taking pictures at critical times while ignoring them yourself, it’s a few yards to the toilets in the LWH and you may have to queu.
Make sure that you keep your mobile phone switched on at all times, not only in order that it will ring with an annoying tone, but also so that you can call someone and explain to them very loudly what you are seeing.
Don’t forget to stand up and block everyones view at a vital moment, if there is someone behind with a camera, too bad.
Finally, when the Balbo is gathering, start packing up in order to get out of the airfield before the rush, pushing everyone out of the way, and you don’t have to bother picking up your litter either, DX employ people to do that after all.
If you think I’m joking, it’s a bit like ‘Piece of Cake’, these people can do this, but not at the same place or at the same time, or can they, I’ve been watching them do this for a long time.

take a backpack and sufficient provisions to put a Tabbing Royal Marine to shame, lumber backwards in the narrow confines of the stalls, putting all unsunder including model kits, books and (in this case) a well behaved, non inflatable red arrow flying boy….. and don’t get me started on the ski poles……. what is it with the ski poles?

Hi All

Just to say I had a fantastic day yesterday. I thought the B17 flying was magic. Was especially impressed by the Mustangs. Thought their flying and “presentation” to the crowd line was stunning. I even enjoyed the commentary which was a surprise !

I found the crowd and people very friendly. Really wanted to buy an A2 jacket but alas could not justify the negotiable blue beer vouchers. Could have spent thousands in the “art tents”.

Really enjoyed the day and thought it a great tribute to all from the 8th & 9th that fought for us and did’nt come back……….lest we forget.

Any have a week off now so its back to my number one interest and Bomber Command. Anyone going to East Kirkby on Wednesday ?

Thanks for the tips all and hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

As an ex RIAT volunteer, was very sorry to hear about the show. How there are no lasting effects as a result.

Off for a Sunday lunch now…..on a steam train !

Cheers again
Waco.;)

To avoid waiting in line to get in:
Dress in some grubby overalls, place some gardening impliments in a wheelbarrow & walk straight thru the main gate like you own the place. Two mates did this exact thing at Mildenhall one time & the guys on guard duty didn’t bat an eyelid.

.. of course this was pre 9/11 so if the guards look like they are about to stop you, just do a bit of weeding by the guardhouse first & be sure to mutter something about *having to bloody work on a sunday* as you walk past the guards.

Been burned rather horribly three years in a row. Even when the sun wasn’t shining I got burned like crazy.

For this year I’ve gone to Israel to purchase a desertish hat and my girlfriend gave me sun lotion at 30 (meant for kids!).

You should try an airshow at Edwards AFB… SPF 75, you squeeze the tube & out pops an umbrella & overcoat..;)

As well as the sunlotion, don’t forget plenty of fluids.

Factor 50 is the way to go!!

My Tip:

Don’t forget your ears, your nose, your neck and the thenar eminance (the muscely bit between the tumb and index finger) on the back of your hand – I always burn there!

This has been a Flying Legends Public Service Posting, on behalf of NHS Direct 😉

We always do though. We think ‘it won’t be that sunny SPF 15 will do’. It then turns out to be a scorcher and we end up barbecued.
