The official opening time was 7pm. There were a good half a dozen people inside so they weren’t too shorthanded to open early for a thirsty mob.
With meals and booze, at a conservative estimate, that cost them 150 quid in turnover that night plus all the times since when we’ve gone straight to the Red Lion at Whittlesford Station without even considering anywhere else.

Not a particularly wise business decision.

IIRC, it was the one in Hinxton that couldn’t be bothered to let us in after the forum meet approaching a couple of years ago so we decamped to Whittlesford and never went back.

Yes, a supreme demonstration of customer service. Twenty or so people waiting outside about seven minutes before official opening time, and the doors firmly locked with the staff occasionally glancing at them in wonder, but doing nothing.

Red Lion at Whittlesford five minutes later, warm welcome, roadkill platter, Adnams.

In a way a pity as the Hinxton one could be very nice apparently but there’s a marketing rule.

Customers who have a bad experience tell about twelve of their friends, customers who have a great experience tell about three.
