Hi Folks
First post here. I hope I have the right subforum. I have done a bit of research on the forums and …WOW I was really impressed with the quality of posts – clearly a lot of very knowledgeable people here. With that in mind, I really don’t want to P** anyone off – so please don’t flame me too hard. On to why I am here….
I am an adult fan of Lego (AFOL). I am also quite interested in military jets. A couple of years ago, I was playing with a few black bricks and the nose section of a Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird” started to take shape. I pursued it further and found I needed to order some extra bricks to finish it off. While I was ordering the bricks from different places, paying postage and packing etc, the SR71 really started to take shape, friends started to comment on what a lovely model it was. It occurred to me that other people – plane enthusiasts, might like this and I was already paying P&P on all the bits. So I decided to build a limited run of 10 kits and offer them for sale. – 10 was the number because that was basically all the money I had to hand at the time! I have sold 5 so far (3 UK, 2 US), and have had very positive feedback from the buyers. Anyway, here’s a photo…

I have put 00s of hours into this and I really want them to go to enthusiasts. – in the main, I just wanted you guys to see model!
Any comments welcome.

Nice job.
I didn’t realize that Lego did black bricks. I remember reading an article years ago, saying that Lego only did brightly
coloured bricks, never brown or green, as they didn’t want them to be used to build anything with a military connection.Perhaps times have changed ?
Lego has been making Star Wars sets for years…including the “Death Star”.
While fictional, Darth Vader made Hitler look like Abba. 🙂
“… the purpose is for the LEGO brand not to be associated with issues that glorify conflicts and unethical or harmful behaviour.” Really? Typical liberal two-face nonsense.
I’d assume their anti-war stance is tempered by $, £, Â¥ and €.
And I’ll also join the OP in pointing out the SR-71 was not an armed aircraft….and they make a variety of helicopter kits in the Puma, EH101 class which were designed for military uses.

Hi All,
Mr Batfastard that’s a new one on me, a disguised compliment if ever there was one :highly_amused: just call me Geoff/Fatty/Doughboy anything you like 😀
Why not do a multi kit that you can make say three or four different aircraft from the same kit ?
Geoff.

Thanks guys! I knew about Lego’s general outlook, but I hadn’t seen it written before. This is why I haven’t approached Lego with the SR71. Although I feel I will still go to Lego Valhalla because the SR71 wasn’t weaponised (unlike the Sopwith Camel that Lego make – go figure), but at the very least, they would have to get in bed with Lockheed, and because of their other “products” that is never going to happen!
I am trying to keep below Lego’s radar a bit (no pun intended), so I go to great lengths to stress that this is not an official Lego Group product, rather that it is a sculpture of my own creation in the medium of lego bricks!
The next model is not military in any way, so I should be safe there! I have poured hundreds of hours into the new model and its looking really good! the designs are pretty much finished so now I have to build one and “play test” it to check that the instructions make sense and that it doesn’t fall apart too easily. Once that is done, comes the difficult decision of how many bits to order – an outlay of several hundred pounds! Its a bit more “Mainstream” so I am thinking of a slightly bigger run. It’s actually looking to have a lower brick count than I was expecting, but its still >500 bricks so it’ll be between £100 and £200. I wish I could show you guys some pics, but I am fearful others might beat me to market. Another guy has already started selling SR-71 lego kits! If I get a wriggle on, I should have them ready for Xmas. if you “like” me on facebook, you should get instant notification when I release it. https://facebook.com/toptablelego
Mr Batfastard – that is a very good idea – there are a number of adjustments I would like to make – and even more that others have suggested, so I might one day release a version 2 of the SR-71, but first I want to get the new kit into production and develop something for those on a tighter budget £20-£30. Any ideas/suggestions for a budget model would be very welcome – doesn’t have to be military or planes.

Just found this on the Lego Answers website.
Guideline for weapons and conflict in LEGO experiences
A large number of LEGO minifigures use weapons, and are – assumedly – regularly being charged by each others’ weapons as part of children’s role play. In the LEGO Group, we acknowledge that conflict in play is especially prevalent among 4-9-year-old boys. An inner drive and a need to experiment with their own aggressive feelings in order to learn about other people’s aggressions exist in most children. This in turn enables them to handle and recognize conflict in non-play scenarios. As such, the LEGO Group sees conflict play as perfectly acceptable, and an integral part of children’s development.
We also acknowledge children’s well-proven ability to tell play from reality. however, to make sure to maintain the right balance between play and conflict, we have adhered to a set of unwritten rules for several years. In 2010, we have formalized these rules in a guideline for the use of conflict and weapons in LEGO products. The basic aim is to avoid realistic weapons and military equipment that children may recognize from hot spots around the world and to refrain from showing violent or frightening situations when communicating about LEGO products. At the same time, the purpose is for the LEGO brand not to be associated with issues that glorify conflicts and unethical or harmful behaviour.

Hi All,
Skybynight,
Excellent job matey :eagerness: Can I suggest when you sell the kits you may like to offer a single seat version rather than just the trainer within the same kit
pack ? Also have you thought about contacting Lego direct and offering them the kit for a commission as I would imagine it could prove rather lucrative ?
Geoff.

It’s not truly Lego until you’ve used at least one blue roof tile and that small clear square with the wheels.

They do Chrome Lego – but it is expensive as hell!
Anyway – if anyone wants to know more about my SR71 kits, I’m on facebook as TopTableLego

Thank you j_jza80. I have another model in the pipeline – much more mainstream but also much bigger! Question is … how many kits to make….
