Lest We Forget- some already have…

hi,
the only aviation connection, is he went in by glider, but when I heard about this, I needed to tell it, and to people who understand…

on Sat 17th May, in his home town of Burslem, SOT. A plaque is to be rededicated to the memory of L/Sgt J.D.Baskeyfield, at just shy of his 22 birthday after service in N.Africa, Sicily, then into Arnhem. He received the VC posthumously for actions on the 20/9/44 while keeping enemy tanks at bay on the Oosterbeek perimeter. He also as a statue a couple of miles away, which I believe is the only one dedicated to a ordinary soldier. The main point I,d like to make is a local primary school was also named after him the John D. Baskeyfield VC primary school, but the head teacher and governors decided to change the name because they did,nt think it would be appropriate for the school to be associated with a failure. Also people would not understand the meaning of VC…To the local people they knew and a petition has been started, and hopefully sense will prevail…

hi, again

just returned from the rededication, and it was good, approx.75-100 there, one vet who knew Jack lived opposite him in fact, and both joined the airborne, but he was at the Nijmegen bridge. Also regt, standard bearers, and members. MP and Mayor. It,s a modest brick base about waist high with the plaque set in at the top, Mentioning the vet,i spoke to him mentioning a WC recording I heard on the internet, from a reporter at Arnhem, after his report he ended by saying “if in the future you meet a man, who say,s he fought at Arnhem, take off your hat, shake his hand and buy him a drink.” Although he had not been at Arnhem I did just that, and I think we both had misty eye,s.
Anyway although I did not start the petition which I,ve been told is going great, I want to thank all who have taken the trouble and signed off here. I don,t know if it will result in a change of name, but hopefully it will have given the school head and governor,s something to think about.

thanks again, regards,

jack…

Nothing in todays ‘Educational’ environment surprises me any more…. (:-/)

Three errors there:

i) missing apostrophe
ii) incorrect capitalisation
iii) incorrect ellipsis.

Apparently the ‘failure’ that they did not want to be associated with was that of the school, which had been put into ‘special measures’ under its original name and the renaming was supposedly symbolic of a new start. Seems pretty poor to me none the less. Where do we find the petition please?
