Thought I’d liven up this discussion and post something which some people could comment on and hopefully lots of people learn something new. Especially given that the most visited thread now seems to be that Omarsharief one. Lets make this thread devoted to air combat scenarios and present options- and then let people comment on what they’d do. Lets not have ramboesque answers like `I’ll shoot all 20 of them down’- but lets use this to actually learn a bit about what modern air combat is all about.
Let me set up the first scenario.
Date: 1970s.
Place: Immaterial- assume two rather evenly matched powers. Also helps remove the political angles.
Blue Force: 2xF-4E. Armed with 4xAIM-7E and 4xAIM-9J. You have NO cannon. Flown by you (Blue 1) and wingman (Blue II)
Red Force: 4xTu-16 Badger, escorted by 2xMiG-23 Flogger-E.
Intel: Red intention is to bomb key population centres. Flogger-Es likely will be armed with only K-13s and Jay Bird combination.
ROE: Need positive visual confirmation.
Tactical Sitrep: You’re being vectored towards the position of the enemy formation- now just 50 miles from your captial. You are about 20 miles away from them- and your radar is still off- as you’re relying on GCI to move in.
What do you do??????
1. Light em up and close in for the bombers with your Sidewinders?
2. Close in and have your wingman go for the fighters while you run in for the bombers?
3. Get the fighters first and then go for the bombers?
4. Have your wingman do a high speed pass to get positive Mark I eyeball confirmation- and get out while you use all your Sparrow to even the odds a bit and then close in?
5. Any other ideas…..
Lets hope someone posts on this- or puts in any other interesting scenarios….in the meanwhile will go back to nursing my scotch.
