My freind has many letters from her G.father Sir Arthur Gouge to Sq/l McKenna during ww2.in these are details of the progress in development of them,the losses and casualties are mentioned in them.also some photos.
Sir Arthur was the chief designer for Short Bros in rochester in kent where he helped in the design of the Stirling the after move to the I.o.W to work for Saunders Roe where he was involved in the Princess flying boat

I’m very interested! I’m modelling a Stirling in 3D and researching a particular crash. The aircraft in question was one of the first and there was a massive amount of modification going on at the time and so I can’t really decide what the particular ‘fit’ was. The sort of variation was dorsal turret or not, ventral turret or not or removed, what sort of exhausts and position etc. I don’t suppose that there would be that much detail in the letters – but possibly clues!
Apart from that, research always generates a massive interest in a subject and with all the speculation as to why the Stirling had the wing span it did and other ‘failings’ I would imagine that these letters and photos would be fascinating, possibly giving the true story, clearly unique!
What are you proposing to do with them – can I have/see a copy please? Sorry, but not easy to be subtle with this subject!
