Leylstad Aviodrome and Schipol Airport ….mystery exhibits!

Hi!!!!

I went to the Aviodrome in Leylstad, Netherlands the other day and found this:

Anyone know anything about this? It looks like the Comet Forward Fuselage that was mocked up as a Nimrod and taken around various airshows until at least the end of the Nineties. Is this it? How did it get here? and WHY the strange paint scheme? Does anyone know the history of the Comet fuselage here, assuming that’s what it is? I couldn’t get inside to have a look.

….Then yesterday I was at Schipol and found this Landside:

The cockpit shape says DC-8 but I can’t see the air scoops behing the radome. Does anyone know it’s identity or history? Is it a DC-8 even?

I tried to look online but can’t find information on either airframe.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

The ‘KLM’ fwd fus @ Schiphol is a former TWA DC-9. I can’t remember the reg, but can look it up if it’s important to you?

Thanks

The unit was originally held by this company http://www.babcock-exhibitions.com/case_studies.php

I’ve just checked my files but I cannot find the tender info (now archived at NAM); IIRC it was a high four figure sum.

How much did it reach? and also, was this an unused Comet Fuselage or was it actually in service?

The ex-“RAF Bottesford” exhibit that IIRC fetched silly money on tender?

Yes, that is the old ‘Comrod’ that used to tour the country with the RAF – it was sold off a few years ago.

I guess it has been in a movie!

Hi!!!

No, I was just interested in the story of the airframes… the reg isn’t important to me but might be to others I suppose….

Thanks,

Paul
