Hi all,
Thought I would post up a few images that I took with my new digital SLR (Canon EOS 450D) at both LHR and LCY over the last week, and also a random image to end with!
Seeing as this is the first time I have posted pictures using my digital SLR, I would really appreciate any feedback that anyone has to offer.
Enjoy!

Nice shots for a first real attempt, Jon.
It sure does take a little bit of time to get used to the different settings on the DSLRs. I certainly found that out, but just by tweaking a few things each time, the difference in quality is quite noticable.
Keep practicing and hopefully see you at the London airports some time!
PS – nice train picture (surprised it was actually running given there are few bits of snow in the picture!!)

Some nice shots Cloud_9.
the 450D has some great capabilities for an DSLR, i have one and i love it !!!
one thing i noticed about the photos is that they are a little soft and fuzzy. you might want to try and play with the settings a bit, you can adjust the sharpness of the 450D to allow more sharpness in the processing of the photo. it is easy to do that through the menu options. thats what i did with mine and i have some nice sharp shots.
i do like the 2nd Airfrance photo, looks tops.

Mr.Cloud9,
Good to see you out with the new cam, I hope it’s treating you well. 😎
Some of these shots are very nice and if you stick with it, even they’ll increase in quality quite quickly – it’s a steep learning curve.

Firstly, you need to crop to a 3:2 or 4:3 aspect ratio if you want to get accepted on the likes of JP. “Letterbox” cropping looks unnatural. Personally I prefer 3:2.
Forgive me for asking what is probably a stupid question, but what do you mean by ‘aspect ratio’?:o
I assume you have the 18-55 lens?…Stick to whole body shots until you have a longer lens.
Indeed, I do have the standard 18-55mm lens, however I do also have a Tamron 70-300mm lens as well (it came with the camera as a package from Jessops!), all of the pics were taken using the latter of the two!
With regards to the LCY shots, try to get the sun behind you. I know the spot well and it’s excellent for spotting, but horrible for photography…
I agree, its a great spot as the view across from the water is amazing, and you get to see far more activity than you do if your stood by the side of the terminal. I only had an hour or so at LCY, so I did not bother trying both locations this time, but I will bear the sunlight issue in mind for the future.
One last thing, on the editing software you’re using…
Well this is where I feel I need the most help to be perfectly honest. Besides cropping the images, I have not edited them in anyway; the software I used is Corel MediaOne, which comes with Paint Shop Pro Ultimate that I recently purchased. I do not even know how to use the full Paint Shop Pro program to even begin to edit my images…I have so much to learn its sometimes overwhelming and on occasions my motivation weakens because I am anxious to be out there taking even more photos!:(
And of course, thanks for sharing! Hope this advice is good for you!
Well thank you for taking the time to look and comment.
At this stage, any advice/feedback is invaulable because like I said in my initial post this is my first real attempt at aviation photography using a digital SLR camera.
I really need and want to get to know how to use my camera properly, as I am currently in the process of establishing a part-time photography business, and in order to make money from it I am going to have produce photos to a much higher standard.
I feel that taking picture of aircraft is a good starting point to get to know how to use the camera because its quite challenging, and hopefully once my confidence increases I’ll soon begin to produce some better quality images; never know some might end up on A.net or JP; that would be a great achievement!:)
Anyone else got any advice/feedback they wish to share, please feel free to post below or even PM me if necessary.

Ok, you asked for some criticism, and I’m just going to raise a few basic issues.
Firstly, you need to crop to a 3:2 or 4:3 aspect ratio if you want to get accepted on the likes of JP. “Letterbox” cropping looks unnatural. Personally I prefer 3:2.
Secondly, don’t crop too heavily. I assume you have the 18-55 lens? If so I can understand why some of those shots have a blurry and compressed look to them. Stick to whole body shots until you have a longer lens.
With regards to the LCY shots, try to get the sun behind you. I know the spot well and it’s excellent for spotting, but horrible for photography (except in summer afternoons). There is a spot on the other side, but It’s not so good as you are lower than the runway causing the gear to be cut off in the shots unless they’re airborne.
One last thing, on the editing software you’re using, are you saving on the maximum setting? Have a look around the options and see if you can find it.
And of course, thanks for sharing! Hope this advice is good for you!

Nice shots. I planned on taking some pictures on Monday for the first time at Heathrow. The weather kinda got in the way of that. The one upside was the Heathrow Central Travelodge. Ideally located for out of towners and cheap as chips as well.

And now for the random image of the day; I know this is of a train, but I was really happy with the outcome of the picture itself that I thought I would share it with you all…
