I know it is Saab2000’s job to post news, but what happened today at LHR is pathetic (almost as stupid as the Tamil Tigers attack to Colombo last year).

HEATHROW RAIDERS ESCAPE WITH MILLIONS
POLICE are hunting a gang of robbers who escaped with millions of dollars during a raid on a security van at Heathrow Airport.
Scotland Yard refuse to reveal exactly how much money had been taken during the raid at a secure area of the airport.
But it is understood that £4.6 million flown into Heathrow on a jet from Bahrain and bound for New York’s JFK airport was stolen.
The driver of a British Airways security van was stopped by at least two robbers and pulled from the vehicle, thrown to the ground and had his hands bound. They then put the cash into another British Airways van and escaped undetected from the scene.
The second van was later found burnt out in the Feltham area, near Heathrow. There was no trace of the cash or the robbers.
Flying squad officers launched a major investigation following the raid at the strictly controlled airside zone near Terminal 4.
The driver was found on the floor. He was treated at a west London hospital for shock and minor injuries to his wrists.
A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: “At this early stage of the inquiry we are trying to establish the exact circumstances of the robbery. No firearms were seen. The suspect vehicle was later found burnt out.
“There was no trace of the cash or the suspects. A substantial amount of cash was taken but we are not prepared to say how much.”
No descriptions of the robbers are being released. An appeal for witnesses has been made.

RE: LHR raided
Somebody else has already said that if these people responsible can do this, they are capable of doing anything!
Once into the airport complex with weapons, they could board an aircraft, pass weapons onto others boarding aircraft and it would be tragic.
All this fuss about extra security and we’re not even feeling safe because something like this happens.
I think they actually need extra security where the passengers can actually notice a difference.
On a recent flight from Heathrow, I was forced to take my wallet out of my back pocket (the sort that is divided into three) and some women opened it only slightly and then closed it again – the item was not put through thex-ray machine and was popped into the dish next to the metal detector.
Returning home from Barcelona, only one woman operated the x-ray and metal detecting machines. We were left to place our own stuff through the machine while she observed the screen. Let’s say I was a terrorist (which I’m not, I can assure you), this would have been the perfect opportunity to smuggle something through because there was nobody to see me walking through.
I must say, I feel for the extra £7 security tax we now pay, I am most displeased and would really like to know where this money is going because I have really not noticed a difference in the way passengers and their belongings are checked before boarding their aircraft.

RE: LHR raided
Firstly, I don’t see how you can equate a robbery without violence with a deliberate, sustained and military attack by an organisation which could be described as a terrorist or liberation movement depending on your point of view.
Saab 2000 has a point. If people can gain access to restricted areas there is no telling what they might do. Security has been breached several times in the UK since September 11. Fortunately, most of these occurrances , are due to the press deliberately trying to prove the effectiveness or otherwise of current security arrangements.
Sadly, I think there will always be an element of risk regarding security on flights. I would think that a person with the single minded goal of creating mayhem on an aircraft could do so without a weapon. Imagine if half a dozen managed to board the same flight?
Finally, I would imagine that the airlines have a “duty of care” towards their passengers. If this is so, should passengers be encouraged, or even expected, to take matters of security into their own hands as they were encouraged to do in the US following Sept 11?

RE: LHR raided
Its quite scary to think that if they an breach LHR security like that and get away with millions, then what else could they do?

I can’t comment, cause everything I want to say is going to get me in trouble but it’s bad!
