But the views are unfortunately not very good from the visitors centre and photography is near impossible without a big fat lens on the end of the camera!

Thats not what I heard… i emailed them the other day… and got a reply today… Here it is copied from my email account…
Dear Mr Simpson
Please accept my apologies for not getting back to you sooner, I’ve been on
annual leave.
Unfortunately the closure of the spectator area is a restriction imposed by
the Department for Transport and we have not been advised of this changing
in the imminent future.
May I suggest as an alternative, you may like to try the Visitors Centre.
The address is:
Heathrow Airport Visitor Centre
Newall Road
Heathrow Airport
Middlesex
UB3 5AP
Tel: 0208 745 6655
As well as being an interesting environment filled with airport history,
there’s a coffee shop, gift shop and views over the northern runway.
I am sorry that the spectator area is not available at the moment.
Yours sincerely
Susan Valles
Business Support Assistant

It should be reopening on May 1st, but they are going to start charging!

It’s not too bad in the Winter when they are operating on 27’s, but it boils in the summer, and when they are using 09L for landing, you only see the T4 stuff finishing their roll outs, and some T1 stuff taxiing.
The one at LGW is much better, but it costs, and apparently they are doing some building work there or something?

The visitors centre is useless. It’s not too close to the action.
It’s location is good though, with a 24 hour McDonald’s right behind. There was also a time when you could get in and park for free, now they charge for it.

Closed. You’ve got to use the visitors centre.
