Well I left Home at 1.00pm, and got to LHR at 2:00pm. When I got the planes were landing on the Northern Runway, but about 3:00pm the changed to the other one.
Stayed up there for about an hour, then departed for about 30mins to go and get a bite to eat. When I returned, took a drive around the airport. Firstly when down the road which runs behind the BMi maitanence hanger, A UA 777 was parked up, got a snap of it, but not a good one, as a fence got in the way. Carried on round the road and came to a pair of Qantas 744’s, very nice. 🙂
Carried on a bit further, and came to the fire training ground… got a snap of the fire training aircraft too!!! Well a bit of it. lol. So anyway… if you carried on a bit further you would have gone out onto the airport apron… now this frightened me a little… no guard/barrier nothing to stop a terrorist getting into the grounds getting onto and/or blowing up an aircraft. Appauling I thought. Yes there are cameras up everywhere but no one actually guarding this particular entrance. All the money spent on protecting the airport, yet there are still faults with security.
Anyhow enough of the negative side of the day… now for a list of what I saw, and I did promise a few suprises. 🙂 , well they were for me anyhow. lol :p

Glad you enjoyed it Andrew, sounds great. I noticed G-EUPV in that list of yours, too. The British Airways A319-100 which I can say I have flown from BCN to LHR last year.
Can I please see the United photo?

I already have EGNM… I wonder what they will have to say on the matter?
I will post here as soon as they write back.

A330 – E-mail BAA about how easy access is to airside…
By: kurmitz28 - 26th May 2003 at 23:18
I went for a walk towards the flight line when Concorde came over.
I saw a Agusta 109 but it was a different one, this colour was red-ish and I think it had american numbers?
By: A330Crazy - 26th May 2003 at 23:15
When concorde came into land I came over to the barrier to get a few shots… more towards the train station end of the car park I was.
By: kurmitz28 - 26th May 2003 at 23:12
Before Concorde was on finals a bloke with two girls walked behind me, and one of the girls carried a nice camera

Actually I was quite suprised at how long we did stay (2-7:30)… this was her first time spotting, and I think she quite enjoyed it.

I will put my pics on here when i finish the film, I took a few of my misses a/c. Next time I go there I will take a ‘proper’ camera and when she flys in I will let her know and get her to wave out the window!

Lol always the way. 😛
I’ll get my pics up on here tomorrow. The girl with me took a few pics, but you wont see them for a few weeks until she finishes the film… Bloody APS cameras… you get loads of pics in them! 😀
I hopefully should have about 15+ pics of yesterdays trip, with an extra 7 to be developed. The girl with me did manage to get a snap of the Gulf330 that you wanted Kurmitz. A40-KC. 🙂
Cheers mate. 🙂

If I noticed you I would of been looking at the girl :p
I was parked behing the silver van, that bloke had driven down with his little son from Manchester to spend the weekend in the car park!
First time ive been in the carpark, I ran over to the garage to get a drink and cheap camera and ended upo with a tenners worth of flowers!!
By: A330Crazy - 26th May 2003 at 22:42
Kurmitz I most probably saw you, with out thinking…. me and a girl in a Black VW polo. Did you see us? We were in the Hatton Cross car park all afternoon. Free as well that makes a change for that Car park! lol :p
By: A330Crazy - 26th May 2003 at 22:40
As for the security scare that I spke off earlier…. In the red ring, at the end of that road, no gate, no barrier and no guard! Just straight put onto the apron!
The white lines indicate where the aircraft cross the road, the Pink line is the route which we drove down, and the in the red circle is the end of the road, where you can have EASY access to the airfield!
By: kurmitz28 - 26th May 2003 at 22:38
Andrew I too was there!!,
I was sat in Hatton Station car park from 4pm, with camera ready for my misses to fly in at 5.25. I was surprised when the Libyian A300 flew in and also the a/c from Kuwait.
The Gulf-Air A340 from Dubai was supposed to land after my misses A330 from Bahrain. I was supposed to leave after she landed to meet at the hotel, but I stayed till Concorde came in so I could get some pics, luckly 102 was early!
Just so you know, I was the mad man in the red MX-5 trying to find the exit from the car park so I could get to the hotel before her!

Yes, I thought it was weird, too. And it wasn’t just this one time, it happened on serveral occassions the 2 weeks I was there. Every time, it was one of the Greek airlines, mainly Olympic. In their operation manual, do their landing conditions have to be absolutely perfect? I myself have only experienced a missed approach once, aboard an America West 733 from LAS-ONT. I was asleep, so I really didn’t realize what was going on, until I felt those thrusters spool up again. Am amazing feeling!
By: A330Crazy - 26th May 2003 at 22:32
Yeah, I have seen an OA aircraft do this once on another occasion, but only one missed attempt.
Though the day that OA 300 missed twice, two others a BA 319 AND BA 320 missed once straight after, which tells you that the could have been a problem on the runway perhaps? But the OA 300 missed 3 times first, and when it finally landed these two missed after? Weird.
By: greekdude1 - 26th May 2003 at 22:30
I guess they use both the A340 and the A306, Andrew. This pic was taken at LHR on May 3, 2003.
By: greekdude1 - 26th May 2003 at 22:26
This was the aircraft I was talking about, in the all white scheme.
By: greekdude1 - 26th May 2003 at 22:23
OA pulled out of Australia roughly around November, so you having seen the A340’s the past 6 months, makes sense. It’s funny you say that you saw an OA A300 abort landing twice. I was in Rhodes 4 years ago and our hotel was directly under the flight path, I’d say about 1 or 2 miles from the airport (so yes, they flew directly above us all day long, you charter boys would have loved it!). I routinely saw various Olympic and even Axon and Aegean aircraft do several missed approaches. I’ve never seen this before to this extent. One night, an OA A300B4 in an all white hybrid scheme, required 4 approaches to land. One day, and Axon 73G required 3. I guess Greek airlines are in the habit of doing missed approaches?
By: A330Crazy - 26th May 2003 at 22:12
Every time I have been up to LHR in the last 6 months, OA has always used the 340, when I have seen them.
Last July I did see an A300, it aborted its landing twice.
