Libya seeks S.African weapons

LIBYA SEEKS S. AFRICAN WEAPONS:

Libya has been negotiating for the purchase of combat aircraft and other military platforms from South Africa.

The negotiations were reported to have taken place last month during a visit by South African President Thabo Mbeki to Tripoli. The two sides were said to have discussed the prospect of a Libyan purchase of fighter-jets, attack helicopters, armored and communications systems in a deal valued at several hundred million dollars.

“It is purely exploratory talks,” Mbeki’s spokesman Bheki Khumalo said.

Libya remains under United Nations restrictions for the purchase of military systems. In 1999, the UN froze sanctions on Tripoli after it agreed to hand over two Libyan agents charged with blowing up a U.S. airliner over Scotland a decade earlier.
