Libya to head UN's Human Rights Commission

Colonel Moammar Gadhafi’s Libya will soon occupy the human rights chair. Africa has nominated Libya which will apparently be confirmed by the 53 member commission soon.

This will no doubt enhance the UN’s reputation as the guardian of human rights everywhere. Perhaps there is a twisted logic to this as Libya has lots of experience violating human rights and will be able to recognize when it occurs.

I guess something like this should be no suprise after the UN Conference against racism in South Africa which seemed like nothing short of a racist event itself where the real racists ganged up on Israel and branded it racist.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-01-03 AT 08:11 AM (GMT)]Sauron , don’t get me wrong.
USA are a great country. However is guess that nobody is perfect in this matter.
I’m not especially proud of my government who didn’t vote against that for example. As far as I know only USA and 2 other countries voted against it.

LMybia is responsible of 2 major airliner bombing ( Lockerbie’s PAnAM 747 and UTA’s DC10 above Niger)

As far as I know Khadafi was the “president” at this time and nothing really changed in this beautiful country !!!!

Maybe a matter of oil ???? }>

“Libya to head UN’s Human Rights Commission”

Hehehehe… the only thing I can think of that is worse is “US greatest democracy in the world!”.

The number of democracies it prevented/corrupted/destroyed because the resulting government wouldn’t have been “friendly” is more than I can count on my 10 fingers.

The UN is not a democracy club since many parts of the world are terrible regimes but need to have a kind of representation. This is bad, but for the moment is how the world works. Gaddafi regime hasn´t been particularly friend of democracy, tolerance or human rights, but let´s be pragmatical. They are making big effords in getting out of the old track, supporting terrorism, and approaching to the West. So if this helps to normalise the situation, let´s welcome it, and help them to achieve it.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-01-03 AT 10:29 PM (GMT)]While the US may grants its own citizens great personal freedoms, you have to understand that for most of the years after WWII, they pretty much spent their time screwing over everyone else. I think that human rights should be considered not only in the context of how a country treats its own citizens, but how it treats other countries’ citizens as well. In the latter, the US’s history is indefensible.

And according to the Reuters report, it was the United States that broke with tradition and forced a vote. Why did the US want a re-vote? According to the vote, 33 nations voted for Libya, 17 abstained, and 3 voted no (including the US).

Looks like the majority of the people wanted Libya- no need to have sour grapes. Why does the US always need to be top dog?

Nah, I can`t take the job. I have moral obligations which I have to fulfill here, you know.

And I`m not going to that North Korean camp. Already have enough bad experience with boy-scouts camps:D.

ELP

I agree that Geforce would make an excellent UN intern.

Perhaps his first assignment might be as ‘special investigator at large’ for the UN Human Rights Commission. His first assignment could be to compare dietary issues at the US internment facilities for terrorists at Guantanamo Bay and in North Korea’s political detention camps. I suspect that the only possible similarity would be that all the meals are supplied by the US. 🙂

Elp, I like that suggestion. Go for it Geforce. It truly is perfect for you.

When read the title of this thread I had to keep from falling out of my chair laughing. Libya being head of the Human Rights Commission is just like one of those really bad jokes. Apparently some parts of hell are freezing over.

Hey Geforce. Maybe that intern job at the U.N. is open. You would be perfect for it. Maybe even a whole career path }>

RE: Libya to head UN’s Human Rights Commission

You liked the old UN better? The one where the US and the USSR decided who was going to take over which part of the world? Libya deserves to have a chance, let`s first see and then judge, ok? And yes, they probably have some experience violating human rights, but the UN would be a dull place if only Switzerland and Norway would take the seats, not?:D
