Lieut Robert Clifford Lovell RFC

Quite a few years ago I saved a photo of Robert Lovell from being thrown out.He was killed in action in Flanders Jan 1918. He was from Newport, Monmouthshire and related to the Lovells toffee people. Just wondered if anyone on the forum had any more details about the circumstances leading to his death, or even about his R.F.C. career. Thank you in anticipation.

Suggest you post the same question on the Great War Forum at http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?act=idx . The forum specialises in WW1 matters and includes a section for “War in the air”. I’ve found the members both helpful and very knowledgeable.

Thanks for the reply kev35, I didn’t realise he was a pilot, always thought he was an observer for some reason. Many thanks for clearing up that misconception of mine.

Ancestry reveals a little.

I have found a head and shoulders portrait photo of him in RFC uniform and is connected with his Royal Aero Club Aviator’s Certificate No. 4477 which was gained on the 12th April 1917. His address at the time is given as “Broughton”, Clytha Park, Newport, Monmouthshire and his date of birth is 6th October 1891. His ‘Certificate’ was taken on a Grahame-White Biplane at the Grahame-White School at Hendon.

101 Squadron was formed at Farnborough on 12th July 1917 and two weeks later the Squadron took up its role as a night bomber Squadron in France flying the Royal Aircraft Factory FE2b. He is buruied in Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery. It seems he may have been killed in a flying accident.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
