Lightning and heavy rain

XS458 was out again this weekend for a run in the dark and very wet conditions – but great for photos!! 

Thanks to Russell and his crew for a great day once again.

It was nice to chat to you on that Saturday – Thanks for posting those pictures, they’re looking so good – mine turned out very poor, my camera threw a wobbly with all the rain!

Exclelent images, looking forward to seeing some more!

Thanks, Scott.

Oh wow that third shot, the colour immidiately struck me and I actually gasped! All in all a great set considering conditions, I have to say if these were shot in gleaming sunshine then they wouldn’t have had the same effect!

Cheers, Huw:D

See you next year.

Great shots Paul will definitely be back there next year, I hope for a dry day next time, even if the weather made for some real atmospheric shots!

I was there on Saturday too. Lovely to meet the team, plus Jason and Rachel and Darren – great pics. I’ll try to add some of mine when I get a chance.

As usual, amazing prof. shots.
The mood of the sky with the blue flash on the machine plus afterburning light actually suits colour more than B&W in my opinion. That doesn’t happen often.

Nice shots. Wish I’d been there.

Seems as though the top engine isn’t working properly – no shocks in the flame. Am I right about that?

Just to add my two penath 😉
Sorry abit slow to read this Doh !

Darren, firstly, wow, amazing photos in what must have been ‘interesting’ weather.

The reason why the burners look different is simple, when Darren took that shot Dennis (Im assumig it was ‘our’ Dennis in the seat ?) hadnt engaged both burners at the same time, its very easily done, ‘rocking’ both though the ‘gate’ at the same moment, is virtually impossible.

What your seeing is the No2 (top) engine just milli seconds behind the No1 (bottom), the No2 is right at the end of of its ‘hot shot’ cycle, with the burner about to come on to full song, which the No1 has already done.

There is alot of ‘stuff’ in there catching up, fuel pressures, soleoind swtches clicking over etc, all manner of gizzmos and its all 40+ years old.

If you can manage to get them both in at the same time, there is no reason why both wouldnt lite the same, there however is a tiny time lag with the No1as the ‘hot shot’ has to travel further down the pipe before it hits the burner ring, but there aint much in it.
As you may or may not know nothing is ever straight forward on a Lightning 😀

458 is a credit to Russel and his team, nice one lads 🙂

Could be the way the layout of the 2 engines are set in the airframe.
one of the engines is set way back down the fuselage to the other engine . this i think as a much longer reheat pipe .

could be wrong thou i’m certain 320psi will give the reason .once he reads this topic.

The flame colour does indicate a different temperature of the top engine. My guess would be that the top engine has a higher jetpipe temp as the flame is whiter. Could be be a difference in turbine rpm or turbine pressure as result of different engine settings. I guess we need a expert on this one.. I’m sure there’s a Frightning engine buff around here somewhere:)

The top pipe lights up first – hence it is hotter in this shot because it was taken very soon after the second pipe was fired up – that may be the reason (I am guessing).:D

There most certainly are shock waves on both pipes.

I have asked before but is there anywhere that has a calender of the Lightning runs as i am (just) old enough to remember them flying at Cranfield and would love to see one scream down the runway again.

I only live about 4 miles away so getting there is no problem but do you still have to sneak between the hangars to get to the apron unobserved (or was that just air show days?).

Either way a sight to behold.

if you would like details of my runs please send a message to my email box
