Poorly A1 Lightning.

Was wandering around the McCarther Glen outlet at York recently and happened to see a shirt in the Paul Smith outlet shop. (Some designer stuff – think i got the name right).

Anyways the Lighting at A1/Newark was being used as the print design!!

Wonder how they got permission for that….

Call me a pedantic old buffer, but the word is “scrapped”, not “scraped”

Peter

I dont think the engines would be much use after a number of years filling with water but the jet pipes would be worth having even if just for static it looks a lot better than the gaping holes at the end of the aircraft.

parts

Hi Scott.
Doesnt look like the engines or tailpipes would be reuseable from XN728 eh? Would any of the engine parts be useable?

As far as i know all the lightning remains at marine salvage and at hanningfeilds were all sold or scraped.

Thanks

jet pipes

Are there not any servicable jet pipes at marine salvage or hanningfield metals where most of the lightnings went after disposal

Peter

Engines arnt a problem everret aero have a few avon 302’s the big problem is jet pipes. As far as i know british aerospace had some spares but they went to south africa. But you never know what could turn up from RAF storage over the next few years

XN728 at Newark

I dropped by on Sunday to take some photo’s of this aircraft, and believe me she’s in a very bad way. I’d always looked at her and wished I could save her, but believe me she’s beyond rescue now. A crying shame. Anyway, I’ve got the photos on my pc at home, and will download some onto the forum tonight if I remember. Odd thing about her is that she still has her engines fitted, although you can all forget about getting anything servicable out of them I’m afraid. Too much of a mess… 🙁

engines

Unless theres anything left at marine salvage, I doubt wether or not you would be able to find reasonably priced useable engines and jetpipes for her….

I agree.
I don’t know how long it’s been there but I’ve been conscious of it for a good ten years.
As I’m usually doing 70mph (of course) when I go past, it’s safer to concentrate on driving but, judging by the photo, scrapping appears to be the only realistic option.

Wish someone would either rescue that junkyard Lighting and do something with it, or scrap the thing. Its a sad, rotting carcass, and really shouldnt be subjected to sitting beside the A1 slowly decaying.

Peter -there is no connection with Newark Air Museum and the Lightning in the yard of A1 Commercials nearby.

Peter,

What are we talking about here?? If its the Lightning in the thread then it seems she is in a museum in Doncaster and has a good future under Scott C. If however you are refering to another Lightning let us know.
