Lightning Preservation Group QRA Day 8th July 2006

I know it’s already been mentioned in the QRA hangar progress thread by 320psi, but with a week to go thought i’d give it it’s own thread. As well as the interesting collection of aircraft to be seen at Bruntingthorpe, there will also be the sight and sound of two EE Lightnings, Hawker Hunter, EE Canberra and Jet Provost doing high speed taxi runs, as well as model aircraft flying and also a Blackburn Buccaneer doing demonstrations of it’s wings folding and undercarriage retracting and extending again. Here’s the order of the day, subject to availability of course

Running order

Model Flying 10.30
Lightning 11.30
Jet Provost 11.50
Canberra 12.10
Lightning 12.30
Auction 12.50
Hunter 13.30
Buccaneer (ground demo) 13.50
Jet Provost 14.10
Model Flying 14.30
Canberra 15.00
Hunter 15.20
Lightning streamed pairs 15.40
Model Flying 16.00

Pilots for the day:
Air Cdre John Spencer, former OC RAF Binbrook
Sqn Ldr Dennis Brooks, former OC LTF,
Flt Lt Ian Wilde, 5, 19 & 29

More up to date news on http://www.lightnings.org.uk

Prices are;

£12 Adults
£6 Children & OAP’s
£32 Family (two adults, two children)

Be good to see some faces from the forum and hopefully be plenty of visitors to keep the Lightnings running for as long as possible and get the QRA shed finished to house them in.

Cheers, Rob

Very nice thanks for posting. 🙂

Would you mind posting that second shot on this thread;
http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=59505&highlight=LIGHTNING+QUERY

It gives a perfect example of the burning ‘hot shot’ sent down the pipe just after the nozzels have gone to fully open prior to the burner lighting, which is what I tried to explain.

You can just see the No1 has just lit and the No 2 is just a spilt second behind. Perfect and something we dont see alot of.

Cheers

Hi all, good news from the open day takings we took just under £11,000, brilliant, our best ever turn out, many thanks to all who attended.

So after insurance £5000, Fuel £1,500,Avpin £600 and many of the other costs related to holding these days we cleared a profit of just over £3000.

Great, but we still have a long way to go to reach the 30K needed for the floor, but its all in the right direction 😀

Thanks once again

Nige, holiday! you must be going soft, whats one of those????? you know me too well, but I was on my best behaviour though, honest 😀

Andy, August shouldnt be a problem, what are the dates again? AALO film camera man is investigating re agencies, as soon as I know more I’ll…blah blah blah.

Peter, I didnt take the footage, it was someone else. It may be a week or two before its ported across to DVD, but as soon as I get it, I’ll temporarily host it some where or forward on to you if ok with LPG?.

Milt, the date is Sun Aug 27th.
Look forward to hearing about the flim agencies.

As for the days footage host away fella 🙂

Just got back from my weekend at Brunters and Goodwood FoS. Superb, even the missus was astounded at the noise and power of those two Lightnings!! My 3 year old lad wouldn’t walk around the back of them after seeing the afterburners! It was an absolutely superb show put on by the LPG guys, the aircraft are a credit to them. 904’s run was fantastic, we got there in just the nick of time. The pairs run was still good, as Andy says, these two can be crowd shy at times!! 😀 All in all a great day out, if you missed it this time, make sure you don’t miss the runs on the 27th August! 😉

Glad everything went ok Andy, my only disappointment was the fact that I was in South Devon on Holiday, thus this was the first LPG Open Day that I missed since 1996!!!! Ten years worth of loyalty out of the window 😡

Did Milt behave himself??

Milt was a perfect gent 😀
He got the golden spanner award for fixing a canopy snag at 6pm on Friday evening 🙂

Hi Milt, would like to see the footage of the run when you get it.

As for Sunday yes we went over to just make sure all was OK which it was.
Then came home feeling dazed and confused (no change there then 😀 )

I must admit 904’s reheats were perfect, the noise and power were something to behold from our close view point.

Once again thanks for your input.

See you in August if your up for another weekend with the LPG?

Cheers 🙂

Hi all, just arived home after a very busy weekend, with a bumper crowd which brought in plenty of money, not sure how much yet but we definatley broke even.

To all the guys I met for the first time just like to say great to meet you all and sorry I couldnt spend much time with you all, I hope you all enjoyed it.

To MJR many thanks for your input and help, see you soon mate.

Sorry abou 904’s no2 going sick at the end, ‘thats Lightnings’ for you, though 7 out of 8 starts is a good record for us and the two old girls.
We will fix her before August 27th, when we intend to run her once, 728 will be on cockpit tours all day.

Thanks for posting some nice shots, we never get any 😉

As for Mike Beachy Head talking to the CAA I couldnt possibly comment its the first Ive heard of it.

Once again thanks to all who attended a great day thats got us a little nearer getting some concrete down in the ‘shed’

Cheers
Andy B 🙂

Andy, no probs it was a pleasure, A great weekend, home from home, apart from the running bit! 😀 904 was totally awsome!!!!, after her performance on the first run, I think she was more than entitled to enforce that she was still boss in the afternoon :p thats pretty much the best Lightning reheat run I have ever seen, absolutely perfect, and a total credit to you guys.

Ill get a copy of the run video to cd asap. Did you go down sunday too?! you must have been bush wacked last night!

cheers

M

Don’t worry mate, personally I love them, they look good and sound good. I’ve heard them being called ‘jet pigs’ a couple of times so the name’s kind of stuck in my head, plus it’s a lot easier to say than ‘jet provost’. Could swear there used to be a black and silver one there (as well as a piston provost), but yesterday could only see the two in red/white

Hi yes you are right there did used to be a black JP at Brunty, it was sold back in the spring to an unknown buyer, who dismantled it and roaded it out.
The piston provost had been on site for many years was sold back in the autum of 2005 to a buyer in Japan, who had it dismantled and shipped over there as a static.
Nev Martin of Phoneix Aviation owned both airframes and is down scaling his collection at Brunty.

Cheers

Never heard that before. We did use a few colourful names, but the polite term was ‘JayPee’ (used with an affectionate smile) 😀
