Lightning Twilight Rolling Thunder Run Nov 28th

http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/vv316/volvosmoker/Twilight-Rolling-Thunder-20.jpg

Now that Andy (320psi) is no longer posting on here, this is a reminder of this upcoming event, these guys have worked really hard over a long period, they are now close to having the 2 Lightnings snugged up indoors for the winter, but obviously could do with good support for this event to help pay for completion of the QRA Hangar.
I am going to try to make it there this time…Anybody else thinking of going ??
If so it is always nice to meet up with other forum members.

I’ve been taking one home piece by piece so SWMBO doesn’t notice!!!:D the pitot tube took some lateral thinking though (currently disguised as a curtain pole:diablo:).

Lighty

Ooops!:o I got the events mixed up when you asked, a lot of people ask me why they only run one burner at a time on a static run and I just had one of those moments you know!!.

Andy’s reply gives you an idea of the hard work involved in fault finding these little problems which is all the more reason to get the Q-shed secure and weather tight, this last push could see the back doors on and this unique and special place preserved for the foreseable future.

Kindest regards,

John.

Thanks for the reply lads, but I was talking about applying the re-heat while rolling. as explained by Andy I think that what I saw in august was a dual re-heat but with a slight lack of flames and shock diamonds showing due to the minor niggles on the No2 unit.

I have always loved Lightnings and went to the August CWJ day and had a brill time apart from the weather late on in the day  (I even posted a message on the thunder and lightnings site regarding the fantastic job the team at brunty do)

I had such a great day that I wanted more and I paid for me and my son to fast taxi in Russell carpenters T5 what a rush !!!, next time I’ll offer Dennis Brooks £10k to leave the re-heats on and pull back on the stick :diablo:

Can’t wait for saturday, and very fitting to hold it in memory of Dave Stock (very sad news about his accident), I had been e-mailing thunder city for a while with a view to flying next year.

funny isn’t it, I was only ever going to post one thread on the forum but I can’t keep off here 😀

spot on john. Static with no1 at max mill, engaging no2 at the same time would only damage it, cook the engine. fast taxying or flying is a different matter

Lighty,

Welcome to the forum!, they will be doing a ‘rolling’ afterburner run, just like the normal open days but at dusk so the full effect of the burners can be seen.

The reason for not doing them both static is that it is just too risky, firstly you need to tie down the aircraft and have the correct chocks in place for running both re-heats, secondly on a static run with both engines running there is not enough air being rammed down the intake to feed both engines perfectly.

Also the loads on the nose leg oleo are immense, not just a few pounds but several tonnes, coupled with all the heat genorated at the back end not being cooled when the airframe is static it just makes sense to treat the old girl carefully and enjoy a rolling run.

Much more kinder to the airframe:D.

HTH,

John.

Pistonhead,

There will only be XR728 running on Saturday, the gates open at 2pm and you will be allowed unrivaled access the the Q-shed and airframes while they get ready for the run.

The timing of the run will be purely down to them and can be ‘dynamic’, in other words when they are ready:D, by the time the run has finished and the aircraft is returned back to the hanger it will be totally dark, the guys will light up the aircraft with spot light so that the budding photographers in us all can get some nostalgic after dark shots.

There will hopefully be a stall set up by the LPG to sell there merchandise which is great, there may be a refreshments stand but not sure about that.

I have been tot the two previous ‘twilight’ do’s and can highly recommend them, oh and don’t forget ear plugs!!;).

Regards,

John.

Hi there fellas.

Been thinking about attending one of these “runs” for a while. Does anybody have a programme of sorts of what will be running on Saturday? Would be nice way to end my leave from the Army!

P.S. I echo the comments made on the SA tragedy, very thoughtful indeed.

Twighlight Run – Wishing you well

Just to touch base and commend all on the LPG for this superb event and for dedicating it to the memory of the sad loss of DS in SA flying T5 ZU-BEX.

Im sure all our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this sad time. I know its been said in a seperate thread but forgive me for repeating it here.

The last Memorial LPG event was for legendary test pilot ‘Gentleman’ Jimmy Dell.

Regrets that H & I wont be able to make this event so, Lakes Lightnings wishes you all the best for this Grand spectacle….Enjoy.

Be nice to us!!!

Hi Guys
If you see two sad cold looking individuals in yellow jackets, trying to get everyone neatly parked up, please be understanding, it will no doubt be us!!!
Andy assures me that there will be no snow this time, so we won’t have to dig the shed out before you guys arrive!!!
Say hi to us and let us know who you are.
Ritch and Max.
