I had a close up look at XS456 this afternoon for the first time in 15 years.
She is in a disappointing state. When I saw her at a distance last year I assumed her rudder and FOD guards were off for maintenance. They do not appear to have been attached.
Its a shame there is a dirty great hangar behind her. She appears free of serious corrosion, but has peeling paint, the aforementioned gaping open nose and jet pipe, and needs a good clean.
its a pity after the effort to save her she is in such a state.
Very first airfield where i had my first flying lesson btw!

Cool chances are you flew right over my house π
went over Skeg, over The Wainfleet sands bombing range and saw the targets. My instructor told me it was classified, so being a teenage know it all told him all about the types that come over and where they are based. He wondered how I know so much (pre internet) simple – RAF yearbook, bought with my paper round!
then got the magic words “ok, shes all yours π “

It was from right next to where XS456 is now. My Mum knows one of the a/c owners. It was my 18th birthday present…

I try to be careful mentioning the location, as while she can easily be seen over the fence, she is still on a private area.
