Okay, I’m on another mission, sorry chaps…
Next project is a major new book on the Lightning, so I need to begin a search for photographs – preferably ones which haven’t been published too many times before, so we can give the reader something refreshing to look at!
Anyone have any nice pictures tucked away? Or any old RAF/MoD or manufacturer shots? All contributions gratefully received, and credited to the source if used of course.
My email is – tpmclelland@yahoo.co.uk
Cheers!

Great photos uuoret – ahh the nostalgia. A higher-res version of the first should might be useful – it might work as a half-page spread to put behind some text. If you can send me that when you have a minute please let me know – tpmclelland@yahoo.co.uk cheers!
Mack– thanks for the pointer – I had already spotted your excellent site so I’ll message you on that.
Binbrook – I’m intrigued… which Lightning is this?
I’m still trying to find a lead for Richard Wilson, the guy who took the beautiful 56 Squadron shots (Firebirds and checker-tailed machines) many years ago. He seems to have disappeared. Anyone heard anything of him?

Ahh, the ill-fated Mike Thompson’s aircraft no less (XP753)…

‘nuther one (XP753 again)

Something like this…..
XP741 & XP753 on a run in and break – will tidy up the picture if you want to use it and give you the full size….?

Thanks for that – I’ll get back to you asap. Like you say, it’s difficult to determine what is a “good” photo and what isn’t as it’s a subjective business. I tend to think that any pictures which haven’t appeared in books/magazines time and time again are definitely more interesting, even if they’re technically inferior. I think you can only look at a good photo so many times before you get a bit bored with it?!

Hello Tim; I emailed you, yesterday, after coming up with some 900-1,000 negatives of EE Lightnings. (as opposed to Lockheed P-38 Lightnings 😉 )
They are sorted as to F.1 through F.6 and have two additional groupings for prototypes and foreign variants. These negs are ex-Rob Ashworth British aviation photo collection. Would happily trade many or most of these Lightning images for other aero photos negs or memorabilia..As Lightnings are not in my main fields of aviation interest, I’d be hard pressed to say which images are rare or seldom seen etc..

Thanks for the feedback guys. All contributions gratefully received as they say!
The precise content of the book is still open to question. Naturally, I’ll be obliged to trace the design and development history and service use, but I want to try and make the book as interesting as possible, rather than simply produce the same sort of thing that has been seen so many times before. I don’t think any readers would want to see just another re-tread of the same old stuff. So hopefully I will be able to find some interesting stories and accounts about the aircraft, as I think readers would be more interested in that kind of material.
As for photos, well the same applies – I guess I will have to use some well-known shots, but it would be nice to find some images that haven’t been seen if possible. I’m quite keen to find old RAF/MoD shots too if I can, as there used to be some great images, but so many have just disappeared over the years that most of ’em have been forgotten, which is a shame.
Anyway, thanks guys, and if anyone has any pictures, info, links, pointers to anyone with interesting stories etc., do please give me a shout.

Lightning photos
Tim,
I have emailed you.

I shall have a look through my collection as i have several pictures which were removed from the officers mess at Binbrook in the seventies.
I too also are doing the same thing but just on Raf Binbrook which is basically a complete history from building to its eventual closure so any pics on Binbrook would be gratefull if there is any around .

In the Cockpit? Dunno what that would be – nothing of that nature planned for the immediate future…
