Didn’t like to go poking around it too much – there was a group of teenagers about that looked like they had come in because they had nothing better to do. Don’t think they actually looked at anything in there, just walked through shouting “cos it made an echo” (!) and I did not want to let them think they could start poking and prodding at things.

Wing? what wing? where?

Another good link for aviation in Lincolnshire is via the ‘Things to do’ – “Aviation” part of the Visit Lincolnshire website.

JP XS186 will be finished in it’s original colours and markings from when it was with the College of Air Warfare at RAF Manby from 64 to 68. It is currently in grey primer apart fom the fin which is the final colour.
See http://xs186.photos.gb.net

If anyone wants to come and have a good look round it there is an open weekend this coming Sunday & Monday.

NO! Ollie! NO!

The neighbours will do their nut when they find that in the garden – besides, you are going to look incredibly suspicious trying to smuggle a Vulcan out under your jumper! 😀

Hmm now theres a challenge for me. I dont think my neibours would like it, or my parents. But thats what the large unused space is for It was supposed to be a Tescos but that was 5 years ago.

Final stop-off on the way home was at the East Midlands Aeropark, mainly to have a look at their Meteor TT.20, which is being restored to its Target-Tug colours.

Sorry, couldn’t stop myself, Tollerton 1959, I’m sure they were taken behind where the Bulldog is parked. Had a look round there myself a few months ago, but nothing was happening, unfortunately, the 2 Brazilian Constellations that I remember seeing in the hangar were long gone.

Thanks Peter,
I thought the panel looked a bit TSR2-ish, but wasn’t sure.

Here are the couple of shots from Tollerton.
The Auster flew in, refueled and left again while I was there, and the Bulldog I assume, is a resident, as it was pushed into one of the hangars.

Hastings and white painted panel

DO any of the engines still turn on the hastings or are they all seized up now? The white panel is and engine access from a TsR2.

Last couple,
and can anyone tell me what the white panel is off, please?
It was in the building with the engines, and I could not find anything to say what it had come off.

Will post a couple of shots from Tollerton that you may find of interest shortly.

Wildcat,
thanks for the info on the reg of the JP at Metheringham. It is currently stripped of most of its paint, except for the newly finished tail – looks like it will be silver when completed.

Isn’t Waddington’s Vulcan XM607? and isn’t that the Vulcan that flew the first of the Blackbuck missions to Bomb Port Stanley runway? – so I guess as Vulcans go that makes it pretty special.

I am going to get a map out there an have a look and look into options of taxis etc. Thank you all for your help. Id hope some of you would know why i am suddenly interested in a Vulcan.

if you want to look at a Vulcan up close then you’re better off making the effort to get to Newark – the Wado one is set back a fair way the other side of a fence..

This reminds me of the good old days in the 60’s when we would catch the train from Nottingham to Lincoln St Marks, always sitting in the front of the DMU in case we had to wait for an A4 on the Newark crossing. Then we would catch the ‘Lincolnshire Road Car’ green double decker from outside the station that would take us straight to the BOB airshow at Waddington.
When the airshow finished, we wouldn’t rush back as my old man always insisted that we caught the ‘Tamworth Mail’ from St Marks, which didn’t leave till 7:55 and always had an interesting loco on the front and was non stop back to Nottingham.
Those were the days.
Ollie, could be a good idea to download a 1:25000 map of the area from Multimap.

Its easy to find. Just follow A15. No problem. A cheap map will have all the directions you need. If you are in the area I would recommend staying and visiting coningsby and newark. Coningsby has a bus service every hour that has a bus stop right at the BBMF visitor centre. Not sure about Newark though.

The current Newark leaflet states “Buses run from Newark Bus Station twice daily on route 68 and 68X. Timetable information available from Wrights Bus Company.”

I have heard that the timings for these buses are not brilliant. Why not call the museum on 01636 707170 to check it out? I think there are good taxi services from both railway stations in Newark-on-Trent.

As for the Waddington Vulcan it is now just across from the public viewing area on the A15 road, very close to the end of the runway at the Bracebridge / Lincoln side of the base.

The North Kesteven District Council produce a good Airfield Trail booklet, with all local aviation venues listed.
