Hi guys,
Here is my latest 3D artwork.
Please click on the images for a BIGGER version! 🙂
These images were made as a present for two veteran fighter pilots. They flew the P-51D Mustang with the 359th Fighter Group during World War II. The image shows their aircraft flying in close formation on the first leg of an escort mission into the heart of Germany.
This is the first work I have made for actual wartime veterans and it’s been a pleasure doing this. It was made on the request of a friend of these pilots. He presented the prints to them last weekend, as I couldn’t be there myself (they live in the USA, I live in England). The response of the veterans was better than I’d hoped for. Both loved the prints and said they bring back lots of memories (“some good; some not so good”). The 18″x12″ prints will get a place in their living rooms, which is a great honour to me.
Flying with different squadrons, these two pilots never flew together as illustrated in the image. But being friends for over 60 years now, they should have.
I have just received signed copies of the prints from the USA, which will get a place in my own living room! 😀
Here are two pictures of the veterans signing the prints:

Well, I hope you like the images! 🙂

NB. For your reference, here are two pictures of the real aircraft and their pilots during 1944/1945:

Hi Oscar,
I’m well aware the depicted formation is rather dodgy, to say the least. I’ve been playing for a long time with the composition, and this one looked best. So I sacrificed a bit of accuracy for something more aesthetically pleasing. Please see the discussion on MustangsMustangs for more on this:
http://www.mustangsmustangs.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=331&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 🙂
By the way, the two Mustangs are actually slightly diverging in the image (that’s how I set them up in ‘virtual 3D’), so they would be safe 😉
As to your question for artwork, it’s possible 🙂
Please contact me off-board and we can discuss this further.
You can contact me via the e-mail address on my website:

A mid-air collision is imminent in the P-51 rendition as the pilot in the higher aircraft could not possibly see the lower aircraft with those angles…and the aircraft appears to be closing from behind on the first Mustang.
As a pilot of WW2 airplanes I would not like to be in that position. You must be able to always see an aircraft close to you to be safe..
That aside, very nice indeed…
How do I get one done of my father-in-law’s B-17F “Chief Wahoo” being shot up by a 109 over Italy in April ’44???

Eddie, are you using 3D Studio MAX? If so, please download my E-light MAXScript. It’s an easy-to-learn tool for helping creating more realistic lighting.
The trick with textures is rather simple: make them as big as your computer can handle! 🙂 The real “magic” is in the lighting and material setup. It can really boost the looks of a model.
And don’t underestimate post-processing either. Just compare a raw render:
http://skyraider.allaboutwarfare.com/files/modelling/NA-57_900_raw_render.jpg (yuk!!!)
…with an extensively edited one:
http://skyraider.allaboutwarfare.com/files/modelling/NA-57_900_colour.jpg (more realistic)
…or even black&white:
http://skyraider.allaboutwarfare.com/files/modelling/NA-57_900_bw_scratched.jpg (even more realistic)
I hope this gives you some ideas.
Not a bad model, by the way, and the textures are a good start but need bump/spec/reflection/etc… But improving the lighting setup will already make a huge difference.
Good luck!

Absolutely stunning, Ronnie! I never could get the hang of posing and lighting my models correctly (or doing decent textures ;)) – yours looks photographically realistic!
Here are a couple of renders of a model I did in January. I’m almost embarrassed to show them 😉

Hi Skyraider I do understand completely – thanks for refering me on – as you say perhaps there is someone who will take up the issue – I was also after someone to do profiles on Robert Grienerts P47s as well as the color schemes are particularly interesting

John

Hi John, it sounds very interesting but I’m afraid I won’t have the time for this on short notice. Unlike most profile artist I do my work in 3D (opposed to 2D) which takes considerably more time. On the Mustang artwork I’ve spent about 125 hours. That was a bit excessive perhaps (I normally work much faster), but I still expect the triple Bristol birds to take at least 200 hours total. Since I do this stuff in my spare time, I’m afraid it would take many months before I get it finished (especially since I have several projects running at the moment).
But I suggest you post your request on www.airwarfareforum.com as well. It’s a very nice aviation forum with some very talented (2D) profile artists. I am sure you’ll find someone interested there! 🙂
I’ve already posted a request for you here:

Thanks a lot Richard!
I hope to be doing more Mustangs in the near future. There are so many great colour schemes and markings to chose from! One of my personal favourites is the colour scheme worn by Israeli Mustangs. Does anybody know if any aerial victories were made with these? I’d love to do a combat scene with this one.

Absolutely stunning work!!! I was amazed at the detail, and especially the lighting. You really have a great eye for framing your work too…. absolutely top class!
Well done! Richard
