Little Walden/Hadstock airfield.

Whilst on my travels through Cambs and Essex, I decided to venture off route and look up Little Walden airfield’s tower.

I was led to believe that inside this tower there was a small museum with artefacts relating to the airfield and that a small private company owned it.

So I reversed up the track to see if there was anyone around. The whole perimeter was fenced in and the only sole about was a well groomed large white dog. It did not bark nor seemed that bothered I was there, just wagged its tail. There were no cars parked inside but the place looked in good shape and good decretive order.

Does anyone know if the museum pieces are still inside or who owns the tower now?

If the pieces have been moved, do you know where to?

Thanks in advance.

BP.

I was offered the mission board in the nineties for nothing as long as any damage was put right. At the time I was a volunteer at an East Anglian museum so I passed the offer on to them, they spent alot of time saying they would like it but never actually got around to actioning anything in the end it went to an American collector for a museum in the states.

Little Walden Tower was restored in the Eighties by an architect by the name of Roger Lynn, it was used for his offices, the fence was erected at that time for security purposes. About 1990 I did some work for Roger and was invited in, the only artefacts he showed me were some pictures, I didn’t see any museum pieces, I think if he had some he would have mentioned it. A few years ago Roger moved on and the building was sold, now it is a private residence, I don’t know the new owners although I have seen them coming and going. The building and the site in general is in excellent order with the Maycrete fire/ambulance building still standing. I do anticipate meeting the new owners at some point and I also have permission from the farmer (before ploughing!!) to land on the field adjacent to the B1052, in front of the tower. If I can glean any more info I will share it.
As an aside, another friend of mine ran an engineering business in one of the buildings in the technical site east of the tower, on the wall was the mission board, to my knowledge it is still there. I hope this is of some help. DB
