Liverpool John Lennon Airport plans cleared for takeoff
Paul Unger 20/08/2002 16:05:00
Peel Holdings’ planned 93,000 sq ft (8,640 sq m) expansion of Liverpool John Lennon Airport has received detailed consent.
The extension will increase the airport’s number of passengers pa from 3m to 4.5m by 2006, as well as improving the airport’s accessibility and transport facilities.
Peel, which owns the Trafford Centre and Manchester Ship Canal as well as the airport, expects the scheme to cost £20-£30m and has applied for funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The ERDF gave £8m towards the £32.5m cost of Peel’s last, 260,000 sq ft (24,000 sq m) extension of the airport.
The National Trust (NT) objected to the latest application, amid fears that “noise-induced vibrations” would “shake” its nearby 15th-century Speke Hall.
An environmental impact study by consultant Casella Stanger found that the NT’s objection was unwarranted.

In Spain, it makes more sense to let the train take the strain for domestic journeys…

How is it in Spain, regarding domestic travel, are the fares more reasonable than in UK. As you have confirmed apart from where there is intense competition, here you pay high fare ( ie Mancheshter to Scotland)My ticket from Manchester to Norwich was around £200.00 for 50mins including tea and a biscuits !! Bargain !! I don’t think! Although I realise a route such as that would never attract massive volumns of business.

Exactly Mongu, that´s what I found and wasn´t amused. I have tried to travel there and trip lasted about six hours.

Yes, we’re still in the days of £300 for a 40 minute flight on an ATP or ERJ with BA.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-08-02 AT 07:10 PM (GMT)]Yes I think LPL-EDI would be a good route as would LPL-ABZ (the later is one which has run in the past, and was popular) These flights from MAN are generally expensive. If you look to see what Easyjet have done between the Northwest and Belfast, which now stand at 6 or 7 737s per day as opposed to what was on offer previous, im sure there is scope for an improvent on services up to Scotland. I have used the rail to Glasgow, that wasnt too bad and very picturesque!

great to hear about LPL improvements. More than a London link, I find necessary any flight to Scotland. Train travel is incredible long and fastidious. I have tried to reach EDI and the only alternative was an expensive MAN-EDI. I think Eastern Airways could have profitable links.

😮 – darn it – i was going to go up to NM today n all – we usually get a few – if MAN has low lying fog we are clear – and vice/versa – we get hill fog a lot in winter

RE: Liverpool John Lennon
Should have flown today with Eastern Airways this morning MAN-NWI-MAN. However due to thick fog at MAN this flight (and many others) was delayed from 0805 until 12.00. As I was comming back at 1520, there seemed little point going, so will go next Thursday now. Drove back to the office passed Liverpool John Lennon is brilliant sunshine, it a shame the flight was’nt operating from there as I would have made my appointment! Apparently there were some diverts to LPL from inbound MAN flights, Lufthansa for example.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-08-02 AT 12:52 PM (GMT)]Yes heard this on the radio news last night. i have also heard Keenair may have lost interest in beginning LPL-LCY, as VLM are to begin a similar service out of MAN, also EZY and FR are still rumoured tobe considering LPL-LGW(ezy) & LPL-STN(fr). I think we only need one London link both Easyjet and Ryanair would have more marketing power than Keenair and although personaly I would prefer a service to LCY, maybe either of the other to options would be generally mre popular. A route to London is particularly need now with the Northwest mainline is in a mess at the weekends.
