LLA members day this Sunday

So who’s lucky enough to have a ticket and is going then, apart from me?

While I cannot understand why anyone flying such an aircraft would not choose to wear the best possible bone dome around, I do find the use of oxygen masks with no corresponding connection mildly entertaining 😀 Or are modern headset microphones, such as those worn by helicopter pilots, not compatible with that kind of (noise) environment?

The New Zealand produced Campbell helmets are an excellent compromise adopted by many civillian warbird pilots. They are kevlar reinforced but finished externally in leather, complete with WWII pattern goggles!

I’m sure the pilot who made the forced landing in the Hurricane some years ago was glad of his ‘bone dome.’ Perhaps a little compromise, how about ‘leather brown’ instead of white?

re;

it should be the pilots choice what he wears.

Besides when your on the ground you can hardly see the pilots head.

There’s a lot more to the aircraft than how they look.

So why not paint the aircraft in a modern livery then?

People want to see warbirds because;

A) they sound great
B) they look fabulous and as they did sixty or seventy years ago.

Now it seems to me that such a lot of effort has gone into restoring these aircraft to be historically accurate, and to me it would look better if a period style flying helmet was worn.

Why, do you think it is in keeping with the aircraft being flown?

Fantastic day, many thanks to the BBMF for a great end of season spectacle and for my 2 year old daughter’s debut visit.

Can I suggest though an international ban on bone domes in warbirds? To me they just don’t look right.

Wonderful pictures. I havent been for a while but they used to fly right overhead, not being a public display
Here is a video from 1997 Pilot Mike Chatterton. 14 years old now so not modern quality. They were so low. You can see the size of the clouds change as I zoomed out. One of my favourite shots.
You may if you wish look at my other pictures.

The original reason for forming the LLA was to get the BBMF to return to Lincolnshire and always have the Lanc based there. It just grew from there. 🙂

Lancaster

I used to be a regu;ar but cannot now go,

Talking of last days
I had n open day at martlesham and arranged a flyover by the Lancaster, It just happened to be the very last day od Sqd Ldr Dave Thomas and we were his last call before getting home. he went round for 20 minutes and gave us a brilliant time. he didnt want to finish
if your interested there is a link to that time. The video was good for its time i suppose.

I would guess that the reason it’s called the Lincolnshire Lancaster Association, is due to the number that were based in the county during WW2, so they kind of go hand in glove.

I personally prefer the current title, as in abbreviated form it trips off the tongue easier. I would think that BBMFS would be quite a mouthful.

LLA

I shall be present, having won a ‘Golden Ticket’ for the first time in several years. I shall be taking along veteran Geoff Phillips, who flew with a Lancaster Pathfinder Squadron and his good lady.

I know its all internal politics but I’m sure the Lincolnshire Lancaster Assoc. would be actually be better known to the masses if it was actually named along the lines of ‘The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Society’ or similar.

I’ve said it for years and I know why its called the LLA, IMHO I just think they miss the potential. Afterall we have the better sounding ‘Sally ‘B’ Supporters Club’ rather than the ‘Cambridgeshire B-17 Association’.

Saying that I recommend joining for the membership magazines and the great end of season flying on Members Day.

BBMF Dakota

Just a brief message of “Thanks” for the great overflight this afternoon at approx 15:45 en route from Limoges.
Wondered what the engine noises were, then suddenly over the brow of the hill there she was, nice and low.
Gave ’em a wave, but out of sight pretty quickly.
Please continue using that flight path, I won’t complain!!

Guess the heat might have damaged the braincells a bit.

I was convinced this year was Smithy’s last…..

Fluffy.

Are all planes serviceable, and will Smithy be giving us a last hurrah with an individual display like Gp Capt Atah and Clive Rowley before him before he hands the reins over to Dunc? (The brain is a bit fuzzy, and I can’t remember if Al Pinner did the same.)

He might wait another year for that…
