Lockheed Hudson turretless counter weight query

A very good question has been posted onto the Wings Over New Zealand Forum regarding the counter weight used when the Lockheed Hudson was flown without the turret fitted, as around half of the RNZAF examples were during the war.

It’s stumping us all. Here is the original thread.

Can anyone here help with information on the counter weight, it’s size, weight, shape, place where it was installed and any other details please?

We had a little discussion about ballast weights recently vis a vis lanc mid upper turrets ,just post war (canberra a/c),the ballast weights fitted near the pilots seat (B2) resembled lead donuts and slid onto a bar,all largeish a/c have ballast weights fitted for c of g correction/adjustment.
On smaller (test and evaluation a/c) a/c I have seen specially shaped ballast weights bolted directly to fuselage frames.
Are any good cutaway illustrations available ? might be possible to identify the normal ballast weight positions from one of them.

Adlertag, no the Hudsons in our operational squadrons, and I believe those in other countries, that were not fitted with the Boulton Paul turret still carried the nose gun and ventral gun for self defence. They were operational bombers that simply didn’t have a turret because Britain couldn’t supply enough to the RNZAF.

However the C-63 Transport version, of which several were converted to in 1944, wouldn’t have had any guns I don’t think. Although I’m not certain, maybe the nose gun position was retained. Not much is available on these later war variations sadly.

The Hudson also had a couple of fixed Brownings in the nose. I’m guessing turretless examples were unarmed, so the removal of the nose guns and mounts etc would go some way to balancing things out?

Wouldn’t the counterweights have gone in when the turret was installed, rather than when the turret was taken out? I seem to recall that the turreted hudson had weights forward of the CoG, possibly for this reason.
