Hi,
I think the Tristar is one of the best airliners ever built and am sad to see it disappearing from airline fleets. Has anybody here ever flown on one? If so, how would you compare them to more modern wide bodies such as the 777 and A330?
I have also heard that the supposed maintenance problems with the aircraft are just a myth, and it was actually one of most safe and solid airliners ever built. I know I’ll miss those smokey old engine starts. What does everyone else think about the old bird? It will be a very sad day when the final L-1011 is retired.
Regards,
V1

RE: Lockheed L-1011 TriStar
Appart from being smart, it was a fine piece of machinery. Inside ot was wide, confortable and really silent. I´ve flown with Caledonian and Royal Jordanian and there were really enjoyable flights. Really smooth.

RE: Lockheed L-1011 TriStar
The Tri-Star is indeed a beautiful airliner. I flew on a Caledonian one from Manchester to Tenerife and back. Can’t compare them with the newer aircraft, I haven’t yet been fortunate enough to fly on an A330 or 777!
I think it was the lack of a choice of engines that killed the Tri-Star. Still, all good things come to an end.

yeah, the Tristar always appealed to me more aesthetically more than the DC-10.

RE: Lockheed L-1011 TriStar
I once flew on a British Airtours Tristar ‘Swansea bay’ in 1987 to Menorca. It was brilliant, although when I had seen her previously at Airport Hotel (End of Manchester Airport runway) she made a very disconcerting noise from the port engine when full power was selected. I heard this on several occasions as well as quite audibly from inside the cabin when I flew on her! I think that the Tristar is a really attractive aircraft, more so than the DC-10 due to her kinked No3 engine pipe……
beautiful!:)

RE: Lockheed L-1011 TriStar
The L-1011 was one of the reasons why I used to love going to Heathrow in the 1980’s. One visit in 1989 was a memorable one. Four Air Canada L-1011’s, several BA machines and a TAP -500 series. I saw a Gulf Air machine on a later visit which was a very impressive aircraft.
I have a superb photograph of that TAP Tristar rotating from the runway with a Pan AM 747-100 in the foreground. Classic days.
Airlines such as Delta seem to like replacing the L-1011 with such types as the 767. I like the 767, but the L-1011 was just that bit more special.

RE: Lockheed L-1011 TriStar
I travelled on a BA L-1011 16 years ago, from LHR to CDG. I have to say I enjoyed it, but it was only my secind flight, and it was 15 years later before I flew on a ‘modern’ widebody [A340], so I can’t really compare them…
(I’m not counting the 767 or 747-100 as ‘modern’ widebodies, the L-1011 was still being built when the 767 was first produced.)

RE: Lockheed L-1011 TriStar
Totally agreed V1, i have been on a Tristar, an old one though. Very comfy and all. The Tristar dissapeared because of Boeing only, Its like this Boeing wanted the monoply of the 777 and 767 and they needed to stop production of the DC-10 and the Lockheed Tristar for doing this. Also there was one problemn, the pilots were not happy with the machine. The Tristar was constently having problems with its rudder system and had to be grounded. Cathay Pacific used the Tristar widely, and they had the same compltain. But later on the rudder system was fixed, but know it had a bad name in every one’s mind, quite like the situation with the DC-10s boot doors. But a magnificent aircraft.
