Lockheed Super Constellation UK skies 2013

Lovely to see that a Lockheed Super Constellation is going to grace our skies this summer. The Breitling Constellation will form part of the static display at RAF Fairford Airshow this July. Although static we should hopefully be able to see it fly in and out of the airfield. Anyone know its arrival and departure times? It’s always nice when an air show organiser pulls something interesting and unusual out of the hat once in a while.

Strange that the only two current flyers on the planet are consecutive serial numbers.

.
We at HARS love using this very interesting fact in the tours of our Connie ….that the worlds only two regular flying Super Constellations were built one behind the other in the Lockheed factory.

Fact is stranger than fiction.

Connies of old

She did indeed visit a Duxford show a few years back. I can recall to this day some moron in the crowd saying he found it boring and asking why they didn’t do a more aerobatic display with it! Some kind person put a video on the tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B56eeMJK9V8

This thread brings back memories of my first foreign holiday 63 or 64. Mom won the pools £384. So off to Spain with a 33 guinea Thompson holiday.
We flew in a Connie of Euravia from Luton to Perpignan then by coach into Spain. No seat resevations push and shove. Then the stewardess with boiled sweets for the climb out. The emergency exit rattling and banging until the cabin pressurised then it locked in with a great thump.
The memory of the return to Luton sat in a window seat, watching as the flaps came down, in over the car factory then the ground coming up to meet us.

Now that was a happy landing

Lovely looking aircraft.
My only sight of one was when there was a flypast at Southend, on it’s way to the Netherlands from the US.

It’s a Starliner, not a Super Connie.

I still can’t believe they bought it!

The Connie in my mind is the most beautiful and graceful airliner ever produced.

Let’s not forget the Lufthansa Super Constellation which should be flying in the next year or 2!

And the sister ship to the Breitling Super Connie is sn 4176 54-157 which I drooled over at the Greenham Common show in 1974 and now flies in Australia as VH-EAG. Its really satisfying that all these years later aircraft like these are still airworthy and appreciated. http://www.flickr.com/photos/emdjt42/4403950817/

Oooh – lucky old RIATers…I wonder if it will be a “surprise” anywhere else. One of all-time favourite airliners and with fond memories of a couple of TWA ( I think ) flights back in the early 60s.
