I’m very concerned about the recent locking of the “Low Flying Spitfire” thread. I feel there was no reason to lock this thread, for the below reasons:
No personal attacks were made or foul language used (except by sconnor who has now indicated he will no longer post here).
The film clip in question is clearly in the public arena, being seen repeatedly on television around the world, as well as numerous times on the internet. Not discussing it here will do nothing to change that fact.
The photographer and owner of the film clip, Steve Connor, has by his own admission profited from the sale and distribution of this film. If he didn’t want anyone to see it then he shouldn’t have sold it, thereby allowing it to enter the public arena.
A comment was made that…“Any further raking over of this issue will probably cause further hassle for the pilot – does anyone out there want that?” I would argue that the genie was already out of the bottle the moment this film clip was sold. If the photographer and pilot didn’t want it seen by the public (and obviously discussed) they should have destroyed it then and there.
I enjoy this forum and the members who contribute here, but this thread should not have been locked because OFMC didn’t like the contents. I’m sure the unfortunate American Yak pilot who was caught on film last year dipping low at the bottom of a loop wishes that piece of film didn’t exist either, but the members and moderators had no problem with discussing that topic in detail.

At Steve Patterson’s request, I put my decision to the other moderators of this forum, and all three of them have agreed that it should remain LOCKED.

I can’t ask for more than that. I just hope the moderators will be as understanding when I have a thread that doesn’t agree with me. Of course, I don’t plan on getting caught.

John…on reflection I have altered my original post – I was a little bit riled when I first posted and posted before calming down – as many of us have done previously.

Well, I’m still stamping my feet waiting for Steve Connor to release ‘Flight Of The Blenheim’ on DVD, like he said he was going to!
Remember that guy left waiting in the taxi cab in ‘Airplane’, and right at the end of the movie, he’s still there? That’s me, that is!!!

Right…as the moderator who locked the thread in question, my input:
Some of you may well remember when the video in question first came to light on this forum (about 18 months ago) There was a great deal of heated discussion, and it was at the OFMC’s request that the clip was removed.
I know very well there are thousands of copies of this clip available on the internet, and I know very well there is no way that all these copies can be deleted. However, as OFMC has already asked once for the clip and following discussion to be removed from THIS forum, following the heated discussion on this topic yet again, I have stepped in first.
At Steve Patterson’s request, I put my decision to the other moderators of this forum, and all three of them have agreed that it should remain LOCKED.

fix your Avatar or I will be presenting you with a Gnome shortly!!!
Identity theft indeed – I go on holiday for 5 days and look what happens. All this kerfuffle over an unbordered medium. But listen here Setter my lad, I’ll have no paparazzi shots of my good self plastered all over the ‘net! 😎 Mutters to himself, flamin’ Aussies, stealing kiwi identities (as usual) 😉
By: Manonthefence - 12th January 2005 at 07:15
There, that better ?
Bloody Aussies mumble mumble Cricket mumble mumble Rugby mumble mumble
By: Manonthefence - 12th January 2005 at 06:53
Look mate just cause you are an impatient Aussie who cant be bothered to read and has to look at the pretty pictures!!
Why should I bow to the wishes of a man who has to have his passport photo as his avatar so he can remember what he looks like. 😀
By: setter - 12th January 2005 at 01:55
Look you lot
Now as if MY identity crisis isn’t bad enough I will have to start prescribing G&Ts again to get over you lot playing fast and free with identity fraud – no wonder the internet is choked with thieves and crooks –
I’m off to the Bottle shop (Off licence to you lot!) and when I slide into alchol poisioning it is all your fault – Melv the coments are directed to you , MOTF – Nick they also apply to you about Gilberts and as to your identity fraud – I am a visual person – I believe what I see not what I read so @𐅳 fix your Avatar or I will be presenting you with a Gnome shortly!!!

Now in residence at a home for the recently bewildered.

Steve, spot on. While I don’t like to see threads locked on any forum, a locked thread is certainly much better than those that go missing without explanation.
By: srpatterson - 12th January 2005 at 01:30
Now see what you’ve done Nick, with that silly avatar of yours? Setter’s gone all twitch, and the real Melv is probably going through some sort of identity theft depression.
Change it back, please…
By: JDK - 12th January 2005 at 01:29
‘Is not Melv. Is MOTF wif an ID crisis.
By: setter - 12th January 2005 at 00:21
Well Melvyn
My wife and I spent most of Christmas pissed as Newts because I was under the mistaken belief that I was supporting some P61 Restorations by a pommie Gin Distiller – Imagine how I feel – I have sacrificed the Parker family livers based upon a sham!!!!
Have you gotten all the Macfurggen Cordwanggles fettled on the Clobbermiester yet – Can’t have SP ploughing the countryside by aircraft – it will have to fly eventually you know.
Regards
Happy and airborne New Year

PS I believe the containers are now about to head to the US from a Mr Samuel Gilbert of Brighton UK – any thoughts on who he is – nothing on Companies Register in the UK or with US registeries I looked at ……?
I will keep digging and I think the owner will have to “break cover” when they front up in the US

That’s not the point. It was and is behaviour unbecoming to this board and its members. I am disgusted that Steve has been made to feel such that he has left as he was is one of the good guys. Right or wrongs of the clip, it is irrelevant. It is old news, it is great TV, and it is not worth bad feeling.
I agree, I also feel there is nothing really wrong with this clip being shown, Yes it is old new and for me it dos not give the CAA anything they do not already know, Its a skillfully flown manouvre by a pilot by a pilot who knows a thing or two about low flying to say the least.
We should see it for what it is and that is great entertainment and a piece of very clever flying, Its sad that anyone has had to leave the forum for this.

I have said this before and I will say it once more . The internet is pervasive and normal rules of copyright and ownership have far less effect in the internet domains.
If I steal your coprighted material and post it on the net who do you prosecute and how do you prove it was me and how do you stop it. The answer is you can’t and unless I was very stupid and admitted to it you probably have very little chance of getting at me to say nothing of which jurisdiction do you try to mount the action against me. I’m afraid this is a Giant Gene out of the box and people getting heated with each other doesn’t make it go away.
So please lets not continue to think we can control the world or the internet and leaving the forums does nothing as all forums have the very same issue – no matter where you go on the internet NOTHING is sacred and nothing is protected
YOU POST IT ANYWHERE AND IT’S GONE AND THATS IT – IT CAN’T BE UNCORKED.
So everyone just understand the media you are dealing with and be Happy or don’t play – Don’t get upset with others it’s really not their fault.
Kindest regards
John P

Locking Threads – A Dangerous Precedent
Locking Threads – A Dangerous Precedent?
I thought I was going to read about the practice of Locking Threads, which posed a danger and thus set – A Dangerous Precedent.
That’s the problem with being an engineer or maybe I’m just naive.

Snapper, I never wanted Steve Connor to leave, but I stand by my right to question his statement about the height of the passing Spitfire. Who knows why he made his ridiculous claim, but I think it’s wrong to represent fantasy as fact. If I had got my facts wrong I would expect others to correct me (without my having to retort with profanity). I don’t know Steve Connor, and I have nothing personal against the man, but his claim was false and I believe that has been shown.
As for the bridge scene mentioned earlier, this is covered in “How they made Piece of Cake” by Robert Eagle and Herbie Knott. The bridge is Winston Bridge in Co. Durham and “is the largest single-span stone bridge in Britain…”
