I am led to believe that an accouncement is to be made on Monday detailing plans for Loganair to become a FlyBe franchise later in the year.
It makes quite a bit of sense as Loganair have ended their BA franchise, yet the brand name is fairly weak outside Scotland. Whilst the airline makes a good deal of money on local PSO work, the additional feed that a franchiser brings to the business is almost essential.
With FlyBe expanding their activities throughout the country and Europe as well hopefully they will actualy take an interested relationship in Loganair rather than BA’s forgetfullness of the airline over the last few years!

The Islander fleet is generally used for inter island hops and non urgent patient-hospital transfers. Loganair for many years held the Scotiish Air Ambulance contract, for essential/urgent medical transfers. This was recently awarded to Gama Aviation and their bright yellow helo/fixed wing fleet.
As these services aren’t exactly bookable on ‘ba.com’ British Airways asked that the Islanders be removed from their livery as they were non representative of their services. Cynics have suggested BA just didn’t like the idea of ‘piddly’ little planes painted up in their ‘magnificent’ livery… 😀
Here are two shots I took of G-BOMG in BA and revised Loganair livery. Sadly this aircraft crashed into the sea near Mull of Kintyre, whilst attempting to uplift a young lad to hospital, with the loss of both pilot and onboard paramedic.

Because the inter-island flying that the Islanders carry out in the Orknies and around Shetland are not part of the FlyBe franchise agreement (nor have they been part of the BA franchise for some time either).
Oh right thank you for the information Mark.

Why are the Islanders not getting a paint job?

I gather that the Islanders won’t be getting painted in Flybe livery, but everything else will. Expect to see the first painted Saab from April 2009…

Terrific news all round!
You know, I think they’ll look quite good in that livery.
I was thinking exactly the same Grey…:D
To be honest I am not suprised by the move though, ever since Flybe bought BA Connect, I had been wondering whether they might look to either take over Loganair altogether or offer them a franchise agreement,
Can we expect BE to launch any ‘new’ routes, or will they just stick to the ones that are currently in operation?
Also, will they offer a baggage transfer system for connecting flights…for example, if I decided to fly say LGW-INV-Stornoway, or would I be expected to collect any luggage at INV and check-in again for the onward flight?
Either way, its terrific news for Flybe/Loganair, for the people that live in the remote areas of Scotland and also the tourists that want to visit these places.
I also noted by looking at the BE route map that they are taking over BA’s LGW-ABZ route…also more good news for regular travellers who were dismayed at BA’s decision to drop the route!

Interesting news, and answers my recent question about a new livery for Loganair!
A flybe livery Islander Saabs and Twotters
I look forward to seeing those, especially the Twotter.
painting a 195 and a Q400 in the old Loganair scheme
allowing the Saabs and Twotters to revert to a traditional Loganair livery for a while
At the very least it would be nice to have one of each of Loganair’s types left in their own colours, but I guess that defeats the object of franchising.
1L.

Hmm, I guess if we went in at basic empty weight (plus a bit of fuel+crew) and flap 35 we may just make it 😉 is the runway lit? does the ILS have CATII? 😀
Well there may be one or two cats on the runway as well as a few dogs but I don’t think that’s what you meant. :p

So do you fancy landing a Q400 on the beach at Barra then Deano ?

I agree with Andrew. I think that Aer Arran will now pose a very large threat to BE. It would be nice to see BE start GWY-SOU/LGW/NWI/EXT, and maybe some from SNN! But then they would annoy FR who would start to suew them for no reason
Who knows…..
BE did operate GWY-SOU as well as GWY-BHX over the summer last year. I can’t find a timetable for it on their website so would assume it wasn’t profitable enough to continue this year. It is, however, still shown on their route map so maybe it will return.

I could see Aer Arann having a business model close to that of Flybe which could make an ideal choice to expand into Ireland?

HAHA most likely 😀
Had a text message early this morning confirming the deal, seems pretty good for Loganair (& Flybe)

Public Service Obligation.
What used to be know as ‘lifeline’ flights, i.e essential flights to the remote and rural parts of Scotland where an aircraft service is more of an essential than a luxury. The goverment pays Loganair to operate PSO services in Scotland, I believe a similar concept applies to certain rural bus services around the country as well. ?
The afore mentioned Air Discount Scheme ties in with this and is a Scottish Government funded initiative whereby people who reside in said rural areas qualify for a heavily discounted ticket (50% I think ?) In order that the costs of essential trips to the mainland Glasgow/Edinburgh/Inverness etc can be borne more easily. It’s possible to fly to New York from Glasgow more cheaply than to fly just a few hundred miles to Stornoway, for example…
Thanks 😀
