Logbooks

Following on from the discussion on Winkle Brown’s medals, his logbooks were mentioned.
Logbooks constantly come up is not available for missing.
Now I thought military aircrew logbooks official document and ownership in fact ended with the MoD, is this true?
If it is true, then surely the copyright also remains with the MoD.

In my searches, two important logbooks (to me) have gone missing; those of: Harald Penrose and Ron Gellatly
as I understand it, over the years families have been allowed to retain the logbooks unhindered, in itself this is not unreasonable.

Aircrew Logbooks have in the past proved to be valuable historical references, can we not evolve some system whereby logbooks are copied before passed onto the family.
A recent example is that I was trying to get some information about Leo DeVigne; Leo did at least two tours as a pathfinder, and earned the DSO and DFC (may even have been more), he then joined Armstrong Siddeley as a test pilot and flew amongst other things the Armstrong Whitworth flying wing, he then joined Westland he flew for many years as an outstanding test pilot, he then joined Bristow.
Correspondent at the military Museum(nameless) could not recall having heard of him!
Now all this can probably be written off as the rantings of an anorak I would have thought there is a gap to be filled in some way, The only catch is that in handing the whole thing over to officialdom they will probably be even more inaccessible than simply losing them.
