London Airport 1940's

The birth of an airport.

Wonderful memories and some fine aircraft.

Same location as St Mawgan’s then, it was in a Seco hut.
Somewhere I have a picture of Heathrow’s tower showing the met enclosure, will post it when I can find it!
You must have been there immediately prior to Northolt becoming ‘London Airport’?

Apparently the iconic mid 1950s tower is going to be pulled down very soon.

Facing the tower from the airfield, the Met Office was to the left quite close. In a single storey hut.
One of the pubs was not too far away, facing the Bath Road, it had a well in the bar area.

Hi Peter was the met office in the tower or elsewhere?
I’m fascinated by the original VHT tower as only two were built, obviously St Mawgan is the remaining one.

A fascinating look back. I worked in the Met Office at Heathrow from late 1949 till I joined the RAF in July 1950.

And another classic from the Squadron Leader. Growing up near the airport during the 50s was one of the things which resulted in my passion for aviation.
