London Gatwick 31st May

Spent pretty much the whole day at Gatwick. I’m totally shattered now after walking from the terminal to the end of 08R, a walk which I hadn’t expected to do beforehand but a change of runway required that:). Here are the results:

Quality shots there, I personally think the VS747 is the best shot of the lot, but I also like the tail shot of the FCA aircraft, with the other FCA in the background…well done, and keep up the good work!

Amazing shots – If I picked a favourite it’d be the FCA 757 Nose shot.

I have been to the crash gate many times (see my website www.airline-images.net!! )

I am very curious as to the location you took the pics at the Travelodge itself 🙂

I didn’t take them actually at the travelodge. By referring to the Travelodge I am referring to the crash gate, since it is perhaps the most recognisable building in the area.

will my 70-300 be alright?

That’s what I use, so yes!

wher exactlty did you take the pics from

The crash gate down by the industrial areas. From the travelodge roundabout, take the road that goes towards the runway/airport. It’s obvious which one. I found a hole in the gate where the padlock goes, so I put the camera in there and positioned it so that I could get those departure shots.
I think for a plane that is 757 sized, I used about 150mm.

The Surrey Connect H4 leaves North Terminal Arivals at 20 past the hour and takes about 10 minutes to reach The Greyhound in Charlwood

I’ll have to try that, then 🙂

Thanks very much for comments:D

Greta shots there, Never been to LGW for photos but the spot you got the Air Italy and Atlas Blue looks really good, have to get directions to there. I gather for the departure shots you can get close aswell? will my 70-300 be alright?

Great pics!

You mentioned a stop over at the Travellodge… wher exactlty did you take the pics from, as I never did find a decent spot for departures when using that runway!

nice shots there tom liking the dc10s

Yeah, me too.

The first one (DAS Cargo) is a “Proper” old DC-10-30 isn’t it?

Not one of them newfangled MD-11’s. 😀

Metrobus operate the local services. No direct bus from Gatwick – Charlwood (nearest village which is a ten minute walk from 08R)

The Surrey Connect H4 leaves North Terminal Arivals at 20 past the hour and takes about 10 minutes to reach The Greyhound in Charlwood.

Return buses allegedly leave The Greyhound at 4 minutes past the hour.

Isn’t the Internet wonderful? 😀

Metrobus operate the local services. No direct bus from Gatwick – Charlwood (nearest village which is a ten minute walk from 08R), but there is the 526/527 service from Horley and Crawley, both of which are accessible by bus from Gatwick so it’d be possible but it’d take a while, I imagine.

EDIT: Having looked at relevant timetables, journey should take approx 40 minutes, plus another 10 minutes walking (50 mins in total). Just as easy (if not as relaxing) to walk, since you can stop off (as I did) by the Travelodge at Lowfield Heath where you can get departure shots like the first few in my selection if they use 08R.

Thanks for comments so far guys!

If there’s a bus that can take me to that spot, then I will have to book a little trip down to Gatwick next week!

Most enjoyable. 🙂

I’m sure there’s a bus you can catch from the Terminal that stops at the village fairly near the crash gate at the end of 08R.

Maybe one of the “locals” can enlighten us?

Can’t believe how many easyjet there are in the background of one of the photos.

LOL. Not uncommon really. That shot was snapped at about lunchtime and they all return from their first morning rotations then, therefore there are loads of them at that time! Also in that shot you can see the Travel City Direct / Excel 747 which is parked parallel to the runway at the end. It stayed there for about 2 hours, presumably a tech problem (surprise surprise  :diablo: )
