London – Singapore 1952 – Airline?

I have been sent an itinerary for a flight 9-11 April 1952 for one of my uncles. London; 08.30 hrs-Rome-Beirut-Karachi-Calcutta-Singapore; 15.45hrs.

I am stumped by the Flight No: EM 502

Can anyone point me in the right direction? IATA Tables draw a blank.

Thanks.
Bob

Those old timetables were nice items of memorabilia. I rather miss them in this internet age!

Amazing what you find on the web! Good bit of visual history. I note that the video is of celebration which includes the flying boat era, DC 4 then Connie. Oh well another rabbit hole to disappear down in my research. Thanks again.

I just checked on the Qantas website. It’s just the way it’s written and how the “chapters” are divided up that’s confusing. The chapter “Constellations Span The World” starts with 1954 but if you look at the previous chapter “Post War Expansion” it tells you they began service in 1947.

MMMMMMMMM! Qantas history site and the magic wiki both say the first 2 connies arrived in 54!

My uncle and his family returned the following year by ship.

Pleasure, Bob. It was a bit earlier than that for the Connie though. From Flight December 1948 –

“During the first twelve months of operation on the London route the Qantas Constellations have flown 2,054,480 miles in 8,250 flying hours and carried 7,650 passengers and 330 tons of mail and freight. Next year four Constellation services will operate in each direction each week.”

I must say I envy your uncle! It must have been quite an adventure!

Thanks for that prompt reply Mothminor. I’ve been searching timetables but missed that one.

The aircraft would most probably been the Douglas DC4 Skymaster. The Connie arrived in 54.

So what aircraft type would that likely have been used by QANTAS in 1952 London to (presumably) Sydney via at least 5 stops?

Posts crossed ie the answer was not there when I started composing. I don’t appear to be able to delete, can the Mods do so for me?

Just found a nice old timetable, dated just a couple of years after your uncle’s trip, showing flight EM502 being flown by Constellations –

Hi Bob

That’s a Qantas flight. EM presumably taken from the Empire part of Qantas Empire Airways Ltd.
