Well, we are not “at war”. Or else, the UK would have been at war since the very day it existed because terrorism has always existed and will continue to exist, be it muslim-extremists or the IRA. War is when a state of war is declared, which has not happened yet. Using the word War too often may result in undemocratic scenario’s where the leaders ask too much power from parliament.

I’m not minimising this terrorist thread, in contrary. But to call it a war, that is one bridge too far IMHO. Actually that is what these terrorist try to achieve, to bring us into a permanent state of war where everyone is scared.

I see where you are coming from with this and to tend to agree but my comment was “In effect we are at war”.
The current terror situation has led to the Police and other forces needing to take new measures that would have seemed extreme a few years ago when the IRA were the threat,.
As you say the terrorists want us to be scared and thats why they use the tactics they do, They only win if we give up and let them, But if we carry on our lives they will never win. From what i have seen people are doing this and are united in this oppinion, I’m proud of people for this.

As we all know its a difficult and trying time for every innocent person and even more so for the Police, We all know the Police in the UK do not take shooting someone lightly and would not do it unless they saw a threat.
The Stockwell incident seems to have been handled very well so far, They clearly saw a threat and had to eliminate the threat, Sadly there is only one way to do that with a suspected suicide bomber and we all know that, Who knows what would have happened if they had not shot him.

I would not normally agree with a “Shoot to Kill” policy but in effect we are at War now and that changes everything and i support whatever means is needed to protect us all.
I hope everyone supports the police as their actions are to protect us.

I would hope that they were sure before they shot him.

In the circumstances considering what happened after the Madrid bombings where the suspects blew themselves up, this would be the only option available. If he had been wounded he could have pulled the trigger and taken a lot more people with him.

There will be an enquiry, and his civil liberties will no doubt be questioned.

Yes, however, if it turns out he was a terrorist the police did a great job! This is “fighting terrorism”, not bombing a country far far away. If possible try to catch them alive, however, one can not take too many risks. If he was innocent he would have stopped most likely. I don’t think civil liberties are under attack because of this, in fact, it is the task of the police to take out the dangers the protect the citizens. I find this morally more acceptable than invading countries which have little or nothing to do with this home-born terrorism. The police can do a better job fighting terrorism than the army.

Judging by the reports, they were sure, they had been following him, challenged him and he ran off, they did issue warnings before they shot. So if he had done nothing wrong then why did he not stop? Speak volumes really.

I for one support the police on this shoot to kill stance with regard to suspected suicide bombers, if they had let him get away and he had blown that train up……well I really don’t need to say it do I?

And then the police would have been slammed for not doing anything, damned if they do, damned if they don’t. They have a hard enough job at the best of times, hence my support for them.

Hear hear.

Too often I feel we forget about the ‘civil liberties’ of those poor souls who die at the hands of terrorists.

Apparentley the Met have shot a suspect….

A man has been shot dead by armed officers at Stockwell Tube station, as police hunt four would-be bombers.

Mate of mine and me were discussing this one over lunch. The ‘shot five times’ comment reminded us of the inquiry into the Gib IRA shootings some years ago, when one of the SAS lads was asked why he’d shot an IRA man thirteen times.

“‘cos that’s all I had in the gun, sir.”

I concur with Andy – indications so far are that it’s “Minor explosions using detonators only”. – http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4703777.stm

Low impact, high disruption, high panic. Fulfils the terrorists aims perfectly. Reckon we’ve got more of this to come this summer… 🙁

Seems they wanted more than that though does’nt it, We have been lucky this time that he bombs themselves did not “Go Off”, I fear to this is just the start of it and i hope and pray i am wrong but i fear worse is to come.

I was at work today had just arrived when this all started to happen and felt complete shock but absolute determination to get people home. The public have been overall great today from what i saw and i feel Londoners and her visitors are coping pretty well really, Theres no comfort in the fact the attacks this time failed but at least this time everybody went home alive.
Lets be strong people and show these bast*rds that we are strong and will not back down.

Just got home to a flurry of News updates in my email box. Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw what had happened in London. Incredible! I glad to hear there was no loss of life and only a single casualty, which in my mind is far too much! My prayers are with you all!

Sky news reporting one of the explosions to have been minor – a rucksack blew up as a man was carrying it, “the man carrying the rucksack looked extremely dismayed”.
