You just knew it was going to happen, didnt you.
From a “contingency fund” of £2.7 Billion the cost of the Games has rocketed to an astounding (so far),£9.4 Billion.
And how will part of this debt be paid off?, simple………steal it from The National Lottery.
Thanks to the shambolic innaccuracy of the original estimate (WHO comes up with these prices), ordinary people trying to raise money for local projects throughout Britian are the ones who will suffer the most.
I could go on and on and…………………., but I wont, I have had my little rant.

We all know the Games will take britian into debt that will probably never be paid back but people are going to fill out every centre where the games are to have the chance to say, “I was there”.
I cant understand why they put a figure on the games in the first place, why not just say “Look, we have no idea what this is going to cost us but we are going ahead with it anyway”.
Just a slight change of subject, are you in favour of a “british” football team taking part in these games? from a Scottish point of view I am totaly against it.
REASONS……..Token Scottish,Welsh and Northern Irish PLAYER being part of what would basicly be an england team taking part.
If you are going to have a british team, it must be made up of an equal number of players from the Home Countries.
2.. If Eufa see a british team doing well, they may well decide to get rid of (and they have every right), all 4 countries and decide that we have to play under a gb banner.

Cost us a billion to erect a tent
cost us a billion and 7 years for 2 acres of turf and some plastic seats around it.
come on this country is a joke.
the games will be a massive money loss and no one will flock to the games as I’m sure every place to stay will be overpriced for the people of other countries .will be a great way for all the illegals to slip into the country thou.
how much and how long did it take for terminal 5 at Heathrow btw.

Why is this bothering anybody?
The UK balance of payments is currently running at a loss of £55 billion per year!
At the rate it is going by the time of the Olympics in 2012 it will have amounted to nearly £400 billion. That money is lost abroad; at least (as has been pointed out) a good proportion of the £9.4 billion spent on the games will remain in the UK.
The UK has been ‘in the red’ for a decade but that never makes the headlines.

Transport links around the UK are full of fare paying passengers. Hotel rooms acorss the South-East are fully booked, Foreign visitors have an incentive to return to the re-generated capital, bringing other people with them and raising the UK’s tourism reputation…..etc.etc.etc.
Just what London needs…more tourists… 😀

I suspect large sums are going out to various focus groups, surveys, consultants etc for ‘advice’ and ‘mangement services.’ There was even a rumour (joke?) going around the other weekend that the financial consultants hired to make sure the Olympics didn’t go over budget have already cost ten times as much as anticipated for the whole project;)

But surely all that extra money can’t just be disappearing from tax payers pockets, and into thin air as many seem to suggest?
The money must be paying for labour, and materials to construct the proposed Olympics. Construction companies increase their turnover and output, expanding and giving them an international advantage once the Olympic jobs are completed. Labourers are paid wages, they spend these wages on housing, living, etc. When the time comes, flights to the UK (including those on British airlines) are full. Transport links around the UK are full of fare paying passengers. Hotel rooms acorss the South-East are fully booked, and rooms across the country may be booked aswell with people opting to travel into London. The re-generation makes London a much nicer place to live for many people. Foreign visitors have an incentive to return to the re-generated capital, bringing other people with them and raising the UK’s tourism reputation…..etc.etc.etc.
All of these must surely contribute something? I’d say that there should be a significant increase in the UK’s GDP for the entire period leading upto the Olympics, during, and after. Things such as re-generation are also proven to reduce crime rates.
I could only hazard a guess…but I’d say that all these things in return must add up to the several extra £billion being spent.

The funny thing about this is, when Atlanta held the games in 1996, Europeans slammed Altanta’s crass comercialism plastered all over those Olympics. But you know what, Atlanta put on a wonderful Olympics and paid for those games without having to tax people to death or by resorting to schemes. In fact, financially they came out better than anyone before them. Of course the fact that every event was jam-packed with people didn’t hurt.
I know London will do a great job with the Games as well. But Europeans should think before they criticize. We know how Greece turned out with empty venues and ridden with debt when the games were over.

To many people are being blinded by the thought that at long last, The Olympic Games are at last being held here so it does not matter where the money is stolen from.
Cant wait for the day when one of the organisers family has to go to Hospital for lets say an op and be told “Sorry it will be three years before we can do this due to money meant for us being used to help fund The Games”.
The only people who are likely to make any money from them are the companys who get the contracts.

I said when we got them that the cost would go up by £1 billion a year – I guess I was optimistic.

Olympics
Do we really want them????
Think of the good that could be done with this amount of money, Hospitals,
NHS and all the other services that are “Skint”.
