Long Marston Canberra To Move

A deal has been struck that will see Canberra WT483 at Long Marston, being dismantled and shipped to Malta in the near future.

The aircraft has been purchased by Malta Air Traffic Services, and will become part of a planned museum.

Canberra Camo.

Re Canberra Camo. In the early fifties we had a Canberra that stood out among the grey/black ones. It was WD 986 and she was grey/green camo ontop and sky blue underneath. I had quite few trips in her, I often wonder where she went when we received the B6.

I think it was only camo’d when it was used by 7 sqn in the late ’70s. They were used to 231 hand me downs!

Hi J
To be fair – the T birds did tend to rotate slowly around the can units. They were all hand me downs by then.

cheers baz

Hmmm… WT483 in the early 70’s she was painted in the short lived (for canberras) red/white/grey scheme whilst with 231 OCU,I cant remember if she was camoed before I left the unit in 76.
Me…I always preferred the grey/dayglo scheme for canberras, although a couple (WJ731,WJ681?) had a very tasty ‘silk finish’ camo scheme for a while,I think after they had been at Samlesbury for ‘partial reconditioning’ – isnt service speak wonderful 😀

Jon – the Dove belongs to another enthusiast not the landowner. As for the Sea Prince – sadly she is getting grim!

I hope it retains its 7 sqn colours, I think NEAMs TT.18 is the only other Canb in this squadrons marks.

It was touched on yesterday, something might happen, but I cannot confirm either way.

Having had a lengthy conversation with the Canberra’s previous owner Bruce, yesterday, I can confirm David’s message above. All of the aircraft were saved from certain destruction.

I also noted from my visit that their are two Hunters still on site, a T-bird and a single seat, which is in the process of being dismantled.

hear hear David…..there does seem to be alot of sniping at other peoples efforts on this forum…..it should not be forgotten how much help Stu has given to other projects as well. XG290 would not be as complete as she is now and a certain (other persons) beautiful F1 cockpit would not exist at all.

Jogger – the aircraft at Long Marsden were saved by and large by Stuart Holder and family. The vast majority of them would not be in existance if he had not put efforts into saving them. The majority of them are actually in good condition – the paintwork might not be of the highest order but there are aircraft at Long Marsden that are in better condition than some outside at UK aircraft museums.

So in essence whilst it’s great to have a ‘pop’ at the aircraft at Long Marsden – Stuart and family has saved more aircraft than the majority of ‘internet enthusiasts’ – Stuart’s collection is moving on – the Canberra never belonged to Stuart – his efforts however ensured that it’s in the restorable condition that it is today and not a gutted hulk.

How many aircraft have you saved from destruction??

Good to hear…Any deals to get ANY of the aircraft remaining out of Long Marston before they are scrapped has got to be a good thing…They all look totally abandoned and ita a total disgrace what has happened there.
