Long Marston, Warks.

Dropped in at Long Marston last Sunday.
Does anyone know what is happening with the collection of aircraft there, under I think, the banner of the ‘Jet Aircraft Preservation Society’?
3x Hunter, Meteor, Vampire, JP, Canberra, Whirlwind, Devon and Shackleton.

James – The machines there belong to private owners. They are under the threat of the British climate but this is no more severe than anywhere else in the U.K. The Dove in particular is fairly coroded and possibly not the best example to persue. Contact me by PM.

I am from the East Midlands Aeropark volunteers association. Myself and the museum secretary are interested in the Jet Provost and DH Dove at Long Marston. I would prefer them at EMA Aeropark where they will be restored instead of being rotted at Long Marston.

Does anyone know if the JP and Dove are for sale? My museum secretary is wondering how much the Dove and JP will be worth if they were for sale.

I feel sorry for the aircraft collection there.

It seems that there is only one outcome for aircraft left out in the British climate. It is only a matter of time before ‘museum’ becomes scrapyard, but it is painful to see.

RAF gate guardians seem to brave the elements rather better, but perhaps there is a ready supply of personnel for cleaning duty, and a lick of paint.

I called in at Long Marston today (Tuesday) – the situation seems unchanged with the aircraft in the compound.

However the Pembroke on the mound near the airfield entrance (and painted garishly to advertise “God’s Kitchen” music event) has now had the bottom 1/3rd of the door bent upwards allowing access. I guess it is only a matter of time before some idiot starts a fire in it.

Thanks TMN….
Has she had any work done to hear lately? I see in your pics that the fairings for the upper wing joints are still missing…..

Is it just me or doe the shack look a little more complete in this pic? I seem to remember a pic on the net showing the colwing and fairings missing aft of the port inboard engine….

I will be popping up shortly to retrieve a piece of one of my cockpits. Any message for the owners or any info’ you require ? I can but ask….

Dave

I’d be interested in anything you can find out about the Canberra T.4 WT483. Owner’s intentions, plans (if any), etc. Thanks.

Thanks for the info Dave T.
Hope they decide to get up and running again soon, looks to be a LOT of work to be done on the aircraft, but they have the makings of a decent collection.
Good luck to them.

Dave,

Could you see if there are any plans for the Hunter GA11 WV382?

Yeh i can answer that straight away… there are ~no~ plans to break up the collection yet.

As far as the Venom goes, the pod should still be stored in one of the hangers elsewhere on site due to our lovely weather. The workshops on site only contain the Chipmunk and Meteor nose section.

Cheers…….

Thanks Dave T.
Would be interested to know what happened to the rest of the Venom, as there are just a pair of wings complete with tip-tanks, just resting on stands.

Cheers

The Shackleton ,Whirlwind and Sea Prince on site all belong to the landowners. The Meteor and Dove belong to a private collector. I also believe the Canberra T.4 is another private collector machine.

[QUOTE=TMN]Does anyone know what is happening with the collection of aircraft there ? [QUOTE]

Yes, Stewart Holder has become disillusioned with the preservation scene and is taking a sabatical at present, however his father (who co-owns various airframes etc) does not wish to dispose or break up the collection just yet, hence its currently in limbo and closed to the public until further notice.

The Shack and (i think) Whirlwind are owned by the land owners, while the Meteor, Dove plus possibly others (?) are owned by other third parties but kept within the compound.

Hope this helps ?

I seem to remember the Whirlwind and Shack are owned by a different group to the others, all looking rather sad though 😡

Rest assured there are other DH Dove/Devons in Warwickshire (well just in Warwickshire) that are rather better cared for 🙂
