Which new routes do people think are long overdue? Who should operate them and with which aircraft type? What about…..
MAN-LAX-AKL-LAX-MAN. Air New Zeland with 777?
MAN-BKK-SYD-BKK-MAN. Virgin Atlantic with A340-600
MAN-SFO-MAN. BMI with A330-200
MAN-JNB-MAN. SAA with A340
MAN-MOW-MAN. BA with A320

I think he was referring to NWA, DTW-BHX/GLA/MAN etc. There was a massive thread running about it on A.net about a month back, of course that doesn’t mean it’s true but it is apparently going to happen.
I don’t use a.net or pprune, so I wouldn’t have seen this, and indeed you’re right, a route won’t necessarily happen until the day the aircraft lands!

Someone has guessed it, but I really can’t say anymore…it should be announced fairly soon I would guess.
Are you talking about one of the GLA routes? My money is on DL to either ATL to JFK.

So one of my LBA routes has just been announced Banjul.

And surely if nwa were considering it, it’d be to MSP, to tie in with their domestic connectors?
JFK I don’t think is likely, it dosen’t have a huge range of domestic destinations, and with CO operating 10 times weekly to EWR which does, I can’t see the immediate Market.

I can name a few….ATL,JFK,IAD,IAH,MSP,DTW,BOS…

I think DTW is a focus point, didn’t NWA express an interest in using some of their 752s over the Atlantic to BHX/MAN/GLA etc

Think of a US hub that isn’t in your list, and then watch this space!!! 😉

Some overdue routes from Edinburgh:
EDI-MUC (LH or BD) – BD supposedly still hold slots for this.
EDI-OSL (SAS Braathens?)
EDI-ZRH (Swiss?) – high time this one came back.
EDI-MXP (Ideally Alitalia, but perhaps a future route for EZY)
EDI-MAD (IB or BA Connect – a glaring gap in EDI’s route network)
Could add a year round scheduled EDI-YYZ at more than 1x weekly- certainly during the summer- to that list too.
By: RIPConcorde - 7th July 2006 at 01:24
EDI-MAD was tried by FlyGlobespan and failed due to next to no demand.
Flyglobespan never released a press release detailing the reason(s) for dropping EDI-MAD so I can only assume you are guessing. But that’s irrelevant because it never started, was only 2x weekly if I remember rightly, and disappeared from the website only a couple of months at the most after it went on sale.
It can’t even be compared to an equivalent daily service that IB would provide with connecting possibilities.
The pax numbers on the route just now from the charters alone are into the thousands per month, 2500 last month to be precise just from a few charter flights. IB could tap into that, the fact they had slots for a start this summer shows they are actually seriously considering it too.

It seems unlikely that AZ would start up an EDI-MXP seeing as they’ve now officially dropped Manchester from the end of October (and Birmingham last year). They hope to bring back the MAN service in April, however my sources at AZ tell me it is highly likely to be ditched completely.
When did AZ officially announce they’d dropped MAN from October?

BA Connect already serve this route, although through a stop-over at BHX, whether this involves a change of aircraft I don’t know?
Yeah but it’s just not good enough, especially when there is so much inbound Spanish charter traffic. 😉 Although it would really have to be IB who operated this route to make it worthwhile.
IB did hold slots for this route daily to start this summer but that never materialised so not sure what happened there.

I wouldn’t call that “long overdue” quite yet! Maybe in 10 years time. 😉
