The two DC-7’s at Stansted were ex Martinair, PH-DSL and PH-DSO from memory. They were in a compound in front of what appeared to be a fire station together with a Board of Trade Percival Prince and a Whirlwind. They were still there late 70’s / early 80’s and by then the fire station appeared to be unused. In those days Stansted was a very different place and on Sunday evenings the cargo area seemed desolate and incredibly quiet. It was easy to believe that you were the only person there. I don’t think the DC-7’s were ever burnt and probably met with the scrapmans axe when Stansted was tidied up and expanded. I tried to photograph them many times but the sun always seemed to be in the wrong place and the pictures were disappointing.

Interesting shots longshot, the view in the last one is amazing with so many types in view. While on the subject of fire training you might be interested in this photo of ex Irish Air Corps Dove 176 in use in the Civil Defence Training ground to train Fire & Rescue crews.

Thanks pagen01, sad that so many of these airframes were lost. On the same visit there was fuselage of Viscount G-AMAV and remains of Tudor ( the only one I ever saw ) G-AHNO. The Hastings had a P ( prototype ) circle on it, was that the prototype Hastings?

A very long time ago on a misty day in 1963, 2 of the airframes awaiting their fate at the Fire School in Stansted. Quality of photos not great, but it was 1963 and I was a schoolboy !!!

Reading the above definitions suggests the ‘Couple of Olduns’ thread should be in historic aviation. A split between Civil and Military means posting Stratocruisers on one thread and KC-97s on another but that’s no problem, really. What’s a good definition of historic? Pre-2010?
I would argue that more military aircraft were derived from civil types than the other way around as recently suggested….debate and discuss!

Great photos so please keep them coming.
I like all the civil “stuff”. There was a far more diverse range of airliners operating in those days.
I don’t tend to visit the commercial thread as I found it really seemed to cater for modern airliners so maybe a commercial historic sub forum maybe the answer although I am not so sure there is a need to segregate the airliners particularly as many of the older airliners were either converted military aircraft or developments of military aircraft anyway.

I think a ‘Historic Commercial’ sub section has been discussed before, but was found to be little need for it as this forum covers both.

Understand what your saying James, but if you look at the ‘old uns’ thread in Commercial it is mostly supported by those with an interest / background in Commercial aviation. Much in the same way that many who post in Historic are ex RN / RAF / forces. It has to be argued that Historic as it stands contains mainly Military ‘stuff’, and attracts very little in the way of historic Commercial photos or ‘banter’.
So if it helps keep both parties happy my vote would be for a Commercial sub-forum in Historic.

Therefore i have taken the liberty to suggest such a proposal to the webmaster… for what its worth.! 🙂

In the future I load it up in the commercial sub-forum.
I have a lot of more old picture and I hope you enjoy it again.

I say keep posting your pictures here, the ‘Historic’ forum is for anything historic, civil or military, ‘Commercial’ is for commercial aviation, ie aviation that currently earns revenue.

We enjoy pictures of old aeroplanes – doesn’t mater what they did in a former life.:)

Or better still the webmaster could add a sub commercial forum to the already popular Historic one. Makes more sense than having to keep flitting between two different forums to find basically the same vintage subjects.
If its historic then post in Historic…. whether commercial or military.!!!

Hi Teddymax

Those old photos are wonderful. Such great sharpness for that era. You must have used a decent SLR camera. I am sure the images could be improved to bring back the original depth and colour to them too.

We have been posting old civil airline photos over at the commercial aviation sub-forum (currently in the ‘A couple of old uns’ thread) and we’d love to see more of the same from you there! At least until we get a historic commercial subforum going.

Thank you for taking the time to share so many. Hoping to see more from you.

Sarah

Frank

I flew with Dan-air in 1969 or 1970 to France .I went with a music club group to Epernay to the champagne house of Moet & Chandon.I can’t remember where we landed in France but took off from Gatwick ,walking out to the plane on the tarmac .We were all rather worried about the state of the plane’s tyres and wobbly wings !
Presumably a “package trip “? We arrived and returned safely .

Great photos Gooney Bird and longshot. I wonder if the pilot knew how close that fully extended refuelling probe was to the ground on that dirty flypast.!
