Hello
I am looking for the radio which was fitted between the seats of the Westland Scout Helicopter. The radio was probably made by “Plessey” and features 2 distinctive large red Dials, as see here on the Scout outside the Middle Wallop AAC museum. I would have thought that these units were fitted to other aircraft of the time? Any information would be gratefully received. Regards Simon….

Hello Aerial
Thanks for the heads up for the STR37E radio, I did manage to find one in the end on a vintage radio forum.
I am still after the amplifier unit which fits in a cradle in the nose of the helicopter. Apparently when this 6W amplifier was fitted to the STR37E it makes it an STR38, which caused some initial confusion.
Here is my radio and the cradle missing its amplifier which would of measured 9.5cms across and 32cms in length.

So if anyone has one of these 1960’s Standard Telephone and Cables 6W amplifier units please let me know.
Regards and a happy new year
Simon.

The VHF radio is the STR 38 which had 400 channels between 116 and 135.95 MHz. There should be another radio to the left (rear) of the STR. From memory it could have been an ARC 44 (VHF) or a PTR 170 (UHF). The B-47/48 could also be fitted. This was for short range communication with ground forces and was a pain as the antenna had to be raised for landing.
