Looking for an aeroclub near Liverpool, Nothingham or Luton

Hello everybody. I’m Benoit, PPL from France. It is my first time in this forum.

I’m considering taking a membership in an aeroclub near Liverpool, East Midlands Nothingham or Luton. Why these places ?

My aeroclub here is Alès (LFMS) near Nimes. There are regular Ryanair flights from Nimes to each of the aeroports above. Some or these flights are as cheap as 1 euro (more often 30 euros).

For this money I can’t even backtrack the 01 and linup here in Alès. As flying over the UK is a recurrent daydream, I had the idea that it would probably be easier and cheaper to start from there rather than flight over all France and the Channel – a risky bet in VFR conditions.

Moreover, this plan will probably have the additional benefit to make friends, get good advice from the guys who know the country, and enjoy the local beverage at the bar with the privilege of a true member of the club.

Note that if this plan succeeds, it is reversable and could give ideas to british pilot wanting to visit France, Spain or Italy without the hassle of long flights. We coiuld imagine some king of exchanges between aeroclubs.

So my criteria would be :

1. Aeroclubs based on or near the airfield above, so commuting from Ryanair arrivals and departures wouldn’t be too difficult
2. Easy accomodations around the clubs (until making friends and considering home exchanges)
3. Same for cars : possibility to rent a car
4. Not too expensive fees (since It will be my second membership)
5. Based instructor for necessary controls, advice and formalities
6. Reasonably available airplanes and … VRF conditions
7. Some internet practice by the people there so it’s so much easier to communicate by email, skype or so
8. Other members potentially interested by this idea and willing to consider exchanges to the south of France.

Thanks for advice, comments and suggestions

Benoit

The best one was the day he was invited into the cockpit and all the passengers thought that the pilot needed the last sacraments !!!

Missed you! I had to take the day off to do something else. Yes David is a character and contestant of many games shows so I understand. He was telling us a few ghost stories last Thursday. What other rural GA airfield has its own chaplain? 🙂

YES ! with Oscar November. Great airfield. We had a tea at the cafOk and a lot of fun with the stories of Rev.David R.M. Smith (airport chaplain). And so many airplanes… impressive. We also loved these airfields with 3 runways – so-british

We did it at East Midlands and it was a great experience and a lot of fun. Gill is still there, a very nice person. Unfortunately her husband had health problems a couple of years ago.

We hired a PA28 and flought to HalfPenny green – great !

Anyway I wonder why all of us PPLs don’t do that more often. The cost to join East Midlands with Ryanair was 1.5 hour and 20 euros included taxes ; any pilot from the UK could to the same and come fly here in France.

Now I’m looking for someone who would exchange houses / cars to make the trip even cheaper – anybody wanting to fly in the south of France (LFMS) ?

Hi Benoit

Excellent choice.
Although I learnt there many years ago it is still run by the same people (Bill and Gill). It is a very professionally run outfit.

East Midlands is a great airport to learn to fly from, it gets you proficient in r/t and flying in controlled airspace right from the beginning.

Good luck. 😉

My recommendation, for what its worth, would be:

http://www.emfs.co.uk/

Finally I have opted for East Middlands for this time, that was your recommendation Joe. It seemed to be the easiest choice since the flying school is on our arrival airfield and the first contacts with the people there is very nice – they helped find an hotel, sent me the charts to prepare the nav and so on.

We will arrive on april 19th, have checkouts in the afternoon and on the 20th in the morning, and then if cleared we can flight over england.

That will be much cheaper than flying with our airplanes from France (40 euros for the return ticket with Ryanair and about the same for the bed and breakfast) ; I hope that some other english members of the school will want to make the opposite visit to Nimes.

Rob if you are there on friday 20th we’ll be please to meet you.

Thanks for all other advice that will be usefull next time

Benoit, LFMS

Benoit

If you consider coming to Stansted i can put you in touch with the people at North Weald,(EGSX),which is only appox 8 miles from EGSS,a fantastic historical airfield well worth a visit.

I see there are flights to Stansted also (which is to the East of Luton). IN that area there are some nice little airfields including Panshangar, Andrewsfield and Stapleford. Stapleford FC http://www.flysfc.com/ seem to be popular with the commercial side, despite not being based at an instrument field.

Thanks for all these links that I’m carefully listing and studying now. So I’ve almost given up with Luton and will decide on Liverpool or Easts Middlands. I realize that there is not an object as clearly identified as what is an ‘aeroclub’ in France. Here in the UK, it seems to me that it could be either a ‘school’ or or ‘flying club’ depending – I guess – on the emphasize on teaching or renting airplanes or people meeting around the bar ? Anyway, that will be part of the discovery.

Thanks again,
Benoit

If you decide on East Mids let me know and I will pop over and say hello. I have no experience of the flying clubs but Donair has a good reputation.

Luton is not great for PPL. There used to be a really small outfit iirc but not sure if they are going. Light aircraft are quite rare there.

We discussed Liverpool recently identifying LFS and Ravenair.

I know three people who learnt at EMFS. I have also flown in their ex-C172R. Seems a good outfit with competitive prices conducted at an interesting regional airport (freighters, airlines, GA, allsorts).

Google brought up

A The Sherwood Flying Club Ltd
Nottingham Airport, Tollerton Lane, Tollerton, Nottingham, NG12 4GA – 0115 981 1402

B Donair Flying Club
East Midlands Airport, Castle Donington, Derby, DE74 2SA – 01332 810 444

I have no experience of either

Moggy

Joe Petroni operates his Auster from Tollerton, I assume he will have had contact with the club there at some point?

One of the issues is that in the UK they don’t like to mix Airline and GA traffic too closely. Luton used to have a flying club, but I think that has gone now.
There is North Weald which is 25 miles from Stansted, if you can fly into Cambridge, Coventry or Norwich they all have flying clubs, I am not sure about the others.
