Looking for any info about on an RAF tail gunner, KIA in WW2.

Hi all,

Just got this message on another forum and thought id punt it round here to see if theres any information availiable on the MIA tail gunner.

“My mums uncle was tail gunner, lost over Germany. Flight sergeant Peter Jack, little scots fella from Fife. Dont know where he was based though. “

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

🙂 If you get a chance ,have a look at http://www.yorkshireairmuseum.co.uk/
They have a tail gunners section which was manned by veterans. They certainly added a huge amount of information which bought the artefacts to life.
They also have a tail gunners association i think. http://www.yorkshireairmuseum.co.uk/collections/airgunners/index.asp

Hope this helps:)

A relative of one of the other members of that crew was seeking contact with surviving relatives of crew members. I found this post here http://ely.org.uk/115squad/index.htm but it looks like it could be a good few years since it was written.

“I am writing to anyone out there who may be able to help me trace any living relatives in connection with the crew of Lancaster mk11 KO/J LL622 from No. 115 Squadron, RAF Witchford.
They lost their lives on the night of the 30/31 March 1944 on the Nuremberg raid.
Their names were – F/S R.Thomas, Sgt R.F.Taylor, Sgt D.Atkinson, Sgt J.H.Kensett, Sgt F.Hawksworth, Sgt P.Jack, Sgt H.Kendrick.
I am the great-nephew of Sgt F Hawksworth.
E-mail: Mr. Paul Hawksworth at hawksworth@themeadows04.freeserve.co.uk “

I would guess that this is your man:

1369112 Sergeant Peter Jack. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

115 Squadron. 31st March 1944.

Son of James and Christina Moodie Jack of Newmills, Fife. He was 27 years of age at the time of his death and is interred at Brussels Town Cemetery.

From Chorley’s Bomber Command Losses for 1944.

115 Squadron Lancaster II LL622 KO-J. Operation to Nurnberg.

Took off 2233 Witchford. Homebound, strayed N of track and was shot down by a night-fighter, crashing on the edge of the historic battlefield at Waterloo. The precise location is given as Braine l’Alleud (Brabant), 3km SSW of Waterloo.

Crew:

F/S R Thomas
Sgt R F Taylor
Sgt D Atkinson
Sgt J H Kensett
Sgt F Hawksworth
Sgt P Jack
Sgt H Kendrick

All were killed and are buried ar Brussels Town Cemetery. The crew positions indicated in the list above show that Sgt. Jack was Mid Upper Gunner on this operation.

On this operation to Nurnberg (Nuremberg), Bomber Command lost 64 Lancasters and 31 Halifaxes, the largest single total for any Bomber Command operation of the entire war.

Hope this helps.
