Looking for colour codes of aircrafts

Hi all,

up to date I start to make a data base about colours of aircraft parts. I hope to can easier assign broken parts of aircrafts from the crash sites.

Here in Germany we called some types of colours “RAL” , a german norm.
My questions:

a) What type of colour code or norm was used from the RAF for ww2 bomber and fighter ?
b) What are the different between german “RAL” and the used norm of RAF ?
c) Where can I find a list of colour from ww2 bomber and fighter ?

Thanks

Nils

Nice link. I have found a good list with used colours from RAF
http://www.cybermodeler.com/color/bs_ww2.shtml

On interest now, the translation of “RAF-colours” and german “RAL-colours” today…

Hi…

Click this link to take you to a selection of colour charts. http://www.indfinspec.demon.co.uk/colour_charts.htm
The BS381C chart has all the common Aircraft colors (ie 633 RAF Blue/Grey, 693 Aircraft Grey, 537 Signal Red, 298 Olive Drab) some of which I remember were used on the 1950’s jets like the Canberra so I’m sure this is probably what you are looking for.
Both the BS charts differ from your RAL charts as you will see.
Hope that is of use?

Pathfinder,

I have a copy of the following document:”Colours for Specific Purposes” and it’s the British Standar colour swatch for Military colours based on a standard laid down in 1930 and the purpose of the manual was to bring together the principal colours used in H.M Forces and simple a #British Standard’ manual. I think it was intended for commercial use but I can’t be too sure, as it goes into some detail regarding the BS colours. Please drop me a personal message if you want any further details.

Regards,

Chris

When it is possible, may be you can send the scan with email?
How many sites included the manual ?

Thanks !

I’ve got a copy of the 1949 RAF Fire Manual which includes a colour chart for the colours of aircraft wires/tubing etc, could scan that and post it in if it’s any use
