Hi again
Thanks for all the responses so far from my previous pleas for help – all very useful stuff. At the moment I’m trying to find ground crew of all stripes who worked with RAF jets in the 1950s and 1960s. Meteors, Lightnings, Canberras and V-bombers especially! And also any engineers/designers from that time who could help explain why the Canberra could fly so high for its time, why the Vulcan’s delta wings were so effective, etc.
And now a couple of long shots – does anyone know of anyone who had direct experience of TSR.2 in the early 60s?
And does anyone know of any surviving RAF pilots who flew F-86 Sabres in Korea?
Cheers
Tom

Hi Tom,
My Father was an Air-frame Fitter on 3 Squadron (BI8 Canberra’s) during the early 1960’s and then later, Lightnings during the late 1970’s, he’s always keen to ‘pull up a sand bag and swing the lantern’!

Do know of a gentleman whom I’m close with who was Chief Engineer on the Valiants based at Marham in the late 50’s/early 60’s.
Lot’s of storys to tell about the “Organ Loft” amongst others!
PM me if this is of interest.
Cheers
Tim

I know a Sqn leader Engineering Officer who worked on Lightnings, He has a wealth of information, but it has to be serious, he won’t want to be mucked around.

Ground crew
I know of an ex-RAF armourer who worked on Meteors. He’s a Reverend now!
Also, a friend of a friend flew Sabres with the RAF. I think he’s still around.
Anon.

What about the guys who still keep these airframes alive and in some cases still running. 🙂 I would guess they would have contacts.

Tom,
Did you receive my e-mail this morning? I cc’d a number of experienced authors. And good to have a beer with you at The RAF Club in London last month.
